Busting the Corporate Gun Industry's Lies

Lie: Concealed carry permits are just like drivers licenses. Therefore, they should be recognized by all states, regardless of where they were issued.

Truth: Every state has different laws, and this “arm anyone” approach would would undermine public safety across the country by forcing nearly every state to weaken its gun laws. States like California that are working hard to keep guns out of the hands of dangerous people would now be at the mercy of states like Florida - where almost anyone can get a concealed carry permit online.

Lie: Brady wants to confiscate your guns.

Truth: Many Brady supporters own guns. Brady only wants to keep guns out of the hands of people we all agree shouldn’t have them — felons, domestic abusers, fugitives and people with mental illnesses so serious they may be a danger to themselves or others.

Lie: It is unconstitutional to deny guns to veterans in any circumstance.

Truth: Twenty veterans die by suicide every day, and two-thirds of them use a gun. Lax gun laws put veterans living with serious mental illnesses that make them a danger to themselves or others at great risk. The Supreme Court agrees.

Lie: Kids have very limited access to guns in America.

Truth: A third of U.S. children live in homes with guns, and 1.7 million children live in a home with an unlocked, loaded gun. 80% of unintentional firearm deaths of kids under 15 occur in a home.

Lie: A gun in the home makes you safer because you can defend yourself against criminal invaders.

Truth: Having a gun in the home makes you much more likely to die by suicide or an unintentional shooting. When there is a gun in a home where domestic violence occurs, a woman is five times more likely to be killed by her abuser. And for each use of a successful gun in self-defense, there are four accidental shootings.

Lie: The Social Security Administration rule that Congress rolled back earlier this year would have taken guns away from law-abiding grandmothers.

Truth: The law only applied to people 18 to 65 who were so mentally ill they received disability benefits, and were not competent to manage those benefits themselves. This law was originally supported by both the Brady Campaign and the National Rifle Association.

Lie: We just need to enforce the existing laws.

Truth: Of course we need to enforce existing laws. But allowing some gun sales to go forward without a background check is like having two lines at the airport — one with security and one without. One in five guns are sold without a background check because of loopholes in the federal law. We should close these loopholes.

Just like Trump and his steady stream of lies and misinformation, the NRA and the right-wing gun lobby has used these, and other atrocious lies as their main "talking points" for years. The goal of this propaganda campaign is to instill fear of gun regulation into the minds of the gullible so they can sell even more lethal weapons and turn our communities into shooting galleries.
