Educators Demand Action

One of the gun lobby’s top priorities is to force schools–including primary and secondary schools, as well as colleges and universities—to allow guns on campus and in classrooms.

Over the past two years, Moms Demand Action has helped to beat back bills that would have forced guns into educational spaces. And now the educators of America are joining our fight to keep schools, classrooms and campuses safe.

Educators have a unique and compelling perspective on the dangers guns pose in schools and on campuses. Elementary, middle and high school teachers should not be expected to do double-duty as sharpshooters, nor should they have to tolerate an environment where their colleagues or visitors in their schools might be carrying a loaded gun. And on college and university campuses, faculty should not have to wonder whether their students are bringing hidden, loaded guns into their classrooms and offices or vice-versa.

If you are an educator, please sign this petition ( https://everytown.ngpvanhost.com/?source=moms-campaign-educators-page ) to join our campaign. We need teachers, principals, professors, deans, school board members, athletic coaches, and all education professionals to help us defeat the gun lobby and keep guns out of our schools and campuses. Not an educator? You can help by asking educators you know to join our campaign.

The gun lobby uses fear of “active shooter” situations to justify these policies, but arming civilians is not an effective way to stop an active shooter.

•Even police officers, with all their training and frequent exposure to high-risk and life-threatening events, do not always shoot accurately in a crisis encounter. Research casts significant doubt on the idea that civilians could shoot as well as trained police officers in an active shooter situation.

•The FBI found that in 160 active shooter incidents, there was only one successful armed civilian intervention—and the civilian in that incident was a highly trained U.S. Marine. In contrast, unarmed civilians successfully intervened in over 20 incidents.

•Everytown has tracked 113 shootings on elementary, middle, and high school campuses since 2013. Of those shootings, over 1 in 10 were unintentional shootings, and more than 1 in 6 incidents began as a verbal altercation that escalated because of the presence of a gun. Introducing guns on school campuses increases the potential for such tragedies.

•Schools that have allowed employees to carry guns have seen difficulty in obtaining insurance coverage. Some liability insurance providers have declined coverage to these schools while others have increased annual premiums, stretching already tight budgets.

I am a former teacher and that is what I said when they mentioned this after Sandy Hook while I was still teaching. My only defense was a jump rope, fire extinguisher and a microwave oven. I planned on knocking the shooter out with the fire extinguisher, tying him up with the rope and nuking hot water to throw in his face while my 6 year olds under their desks (oh, and you could only lock classroom doors from the OUTSIDE!).

This idea of an armed cowboy saving people is ludicrous.
