Moms Demand Action For Gun Sense In America

Hat tip to the Gungeon for finding this valuable resource for action against gun violence.
______________________________________________________

"Much like Mothers Against Drunk Driving was created to reduce drunk driving, Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America (www.momsdemandaction.org) was created to demand action from legislators, state and federal; companies; and educational institutions to establish common-sense gun reforms. We are a non-partisan grassroots movement of American mothers demanding new and stronger solutions to lax gun laws, loopholes and policies that for too long have jeopardized the safety of our children and families.

Moms Demand Action supports the 2nd Amendment, but we believe common-sense solutions can help decrease the escalating epidemic of gun violence that kills an American child every 3 hours and 15 minutes. Whether the gun violence happens in urban Chicago, suburban Virginia, or rural Texas, we must act now on new and stronger gun laws and policies to protect our children.

Moms Demand Action envisions a country where all children and families are safe from gun violence. Our nonpartisan grassroots movement is made up of more than 100,000 members and a chapter in every state across the country. We are educating, motivating, and mobilizing moms and families to take action that will result in stronger laws and policies to save lives. We support these solutions to help address gun violence in the United States:

1.Require background checks for all gun and ammunition purchases;
2.Ban assault weapons and ammunition magazines that hold more than 10 rounds;
3.Track the sale of large quantities of ammunition, and ban online sales;
4.Establish product safety oversight of guns and ammunition, and require child-safe gun technology;
5.Support policies at companies and public institutions that promote gun safety;
6.Counter the gun industry’s efforts to weaken gun laws at the state level."

Public awareness of the gun violence problem is growing, along with support for more gun regulation initiatives. The NRA and its apologists are slowly but surely being countered politically, and their lies and misinformation are being exposed.

here. Newtown was a huge black eye for our state and we got some very strong gun safety laws in place as a result.

It's people like you who will eventually defeat the NRA and their supporters politically and socially. At present the USA is the most armed and dangerous society in the "civilized" world, but the NRA apologists would have us believe that a minor reduction in murders is cause for celebration, and not more regulation.

The only problem with that false equivalency is that crime rates are being reduced in almost all categories due to improved communications between law enforcement agencies, and other improvements in police resources and tactics. The ease of acquiring a gun in this country allows criminals to bypass any sort of background checks, so registration and tracking is a top priority.

The use of a gun in the commission of a crime should carry heavy penalties, even if no one was injured. Negligent use or storage of a weapon should carry severe penalties as well.

And it's why so many of us were so horrified by what happened in Newtown. It disgraced us in the eyes of the country. But it also woke some people up from their comfort level...

we have sensible gun laws as well, which hopefully may serve as a model for other states. We have mandatory gun registration (all guns); all gun owners must be licensed; assault pistols are banned; and, handguns are limited to a magazine capacity of no more than 10 rounds. While Hawaii is a "may issue" State, the decision to issue a CCW is left to the County Police Chiefs and very few are ever issued, after showing good cause.

As a result, Hawaii has the lowest gun death rate in the nation (2.8 per 100K).

It can be done.

Discuss how to enact progressive gun control reform in a supportive environment. The group serves as a safe haven in which to mobilize supporters in support of measures reducing gun violence by changing laws, culture and practice at the municipal, state, and federal levels. While there is no single solution to the tragic epidemic of gun violence, members agree that more guns are not the solution to gun violence, and are expected to be supportive of the policies of progressive gun control reform organizations.

The open gun forum is the place to discuss the pros and cons of gun control
