Group Pushes Further for Interfaith Marriage in Indonesia

A group of young Indonesians isn’t giving up its quest for more clarity on interfaith marriage, saying unions between people of different religions should be allowed without fail by law.
Three lawyers and one law student plan to resubmit a judicial challenge to the Constitutional Court today seeking legal clarification of Indonesia’s Marriage Law. They say a vague article in the law has prevented couples with different beliefs from registering their marriages.
This problem had happened to many interfaith couples in Indonesia, said Rangga Widigda, 25, one of the challengers. “But nobody seems to want to address it.”
According to article two of the law, a marriage is legitimate, “if it has been performed according to the laws of the respective religious beliefs of the parties concerned.”
