Elizabeth Warren Leads Progressive Charge, but Has GOP Admirers Too

“What reaction do you usually expect from banks?” Sen. Elizabeth Warren asked a reporter last week.

It was classic Warren. Appearing at a news conference with fellow Democrats and D.C.-area college students to roll out legislation she spearheaded that would let borrowers refinance student loans, the Massachusetts Democrat dismissed a question about financial institutions losing profits from older, high-interest loans.

“There’s a real question here. Does Congress work for the rich and the powerful, for those who can hire armies of lobbyists and lawyers, or does Congress work for the rest of America?” Warren asked. “We believe the rest of America should get a fair shot at an affordable education.”

The Democratic senator is well known for her populist criticism of big banks, and the financial services sector more generally, as well as for being the driving force behind the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. And she’s raised her profile with a tour for her recently-released book “A Fighting Chance,” during which she’s been greeted by largely adoring audiences and no shortage of calls for her to seek the Democratic nomination for the presidency in 2016.

Her national profile makes her a natural to lead Democratic efforts to rally their progressive base — like with the student loan bill — but her status as a star on the left doesn’t seem to have hampered her ability to work with GOP senators under the Dome ...

publicly, she is certainly building her street creds.

Seems like anyone who hears her speak, is impressed.

I certainly am.

She could be the nominee, but we just need to convince the Democratic machine that she should be. There has been so much talk of Hillary already having it 'sewn-up', it is frustrating.

5. There's a reason there's a lot of talk of Hillary already having it "sewn-up":

it's not sewn-up with the voters, but somebody wants it to be, before the voters truly start looking around for candidates and decide that Hillary isn't the best choice to represent them.

6. Senator Merkley and Senator Warren (and Senator Wyden too!) were awesome today...

at a Merkley fundraiser. Senator Wyden was an unexpected and welcome guest too.

They handed out buttons with pictures of Warren and Merkley on them that had the lines on it that read:

Fighting for a Fair Shot For All

on it that almost looked like it could be a preview of a button for our ticket in 2016! They have worked together well on the finance committee and I think would make an awesome pair for a ticket in 2016 too! Even though she's smart and won't announce now and put a bullseye on her backside, you almost felt that sentiment was echoed widely in the room there. I know at least one person yelled "President Warren" at one point.

For those in the Portland area that missed that event earlier today, you can still see Senator Warren at a local book signing at the Beaverton Powell's bookstore tonight at 7 PM on Cedar Hills Boulevard.

I'd waited a long time to meet this great lady in person! It was great and standing room only here...
