The European Union no longer enjoys the highest credit rating.

Standard & Poor's has taken its top rating from the European Union. The long-term rating was lowered from AAA to AA+, the American rating agency announced Frida. "In our opinion, the credit worthiness of the now 238 members of the European Union has overall declined." That the cohesion of the European Union member countries has decreased played a role in the decision. This is evident from the tension over the recent negotiations over the European Union budget.
