Related: About this forumI'm re-watching a wonderful documentary called "The Last Waltz" which details the last concert of the group, "The Band"
I loved The Band's music and was in my first year of college when this concert happened in 1976. Great music in this film including some of their best musical friends like Elton John, Eric Clapton and others. I highly recommend this movie...

(114,714 posts)Having Scorsese film it means it is lasting, and the legacy of all these tremendous performers is encapsulated in such a way that new audiences will continue to find it. 'Lots of stories behind it (beyond the documentary interjections... ) For example, Neil Young's cocaine snorting is evident from the residue under his nose (and yes, I adore Young, but like many of that time... ). Getting to see the Staples family (Pops, Mabel, and the sisters) was a joy. Muddy Waters-- a real blues legend. A perpetually awkward Bob Dylan (and Van Morrison)... New Orleans's "finest," Dr. John. The "truly thrilled to be there," Ronnie Hawkins. The amazing Paul Butterfield. So much talent including the Band, itself--among them my forever favorite, the late Levon Helm.

(42,437 posts)... and afterwards I watched "The Last Waltz" again. It brings tears to my eyes, but I certainly loved The Band. As I understand it, there will be a second Robertson memoir that will come out this fall, and it will be about his longtime friendship and collaboration with Martin Scorsese. I'm looking forward to reading that book when it comes out.
