But I was stationed with some missile pilots in Greenland and never understood the AF PRP: if one officer doesn’t turn the key, the other one pulls his sidearm and shoots.
The end result is you didn’t launch your weapon and you are now locked down in a hole with a dead body….

It was a 2 person operation and the keys were far enough apart that one person could not accomplish the task alone

I guess the “belief” was that a person would not want to get shot, so they would turn the key and kill millions instead.

Global thermonuclear war was and has always been a deterrence. Unfortunately, many people do not study history so they repeat the worst parts….
