Elvis biopic budget of $85M

Bohemian Rhapsody cost $55M. Rocketman cost $41M. I think both Queen and Elton John are more popular now than Elvis. Walk the Line Cost $29M. I can't imagine $85M for Elvis. What did they spend the money on???

According to early estimates, the Warner Bros. film is aiming to collect $30 million from 3,900 venues in its domestic box office debut over the weekend. That’s a solid start for a drama catering to adult audiences. But given the film’s $85 million production budget, which does not include the many millions spent on promoting the movie, “Elvis” will have to keep singing in theaters throughout the summer to justify its price tag.

It will make money but “Hollywood accounting” can throw all kinds of expenses in so it technically loses money. Forrest Gump, for instance, “lost” money.

Lots of people love Elvis still. He still generates millions of dollars every year in merchandise.

Might take the wife to it. She isn't much of a fan though. She looked at me strangely when I proposed going to the Million Dollar Christmas Quartet musical.

The director is know for very flamboyant movies, ie "Moulin Rouge" and "Great Gatsby", and this movie is no exception. It is very much over the top, in every way that Elvis himself was over the top. That being said, it tells the story of Elvis and the Colonel as close as you could in a movie setting. Also, the soundtrack is great. Austin Butler sings as Elvis early in the film and does a great job and later it's Butler mixed with Elvis' own vocals, plus they're are some new mixes and covers that are incredible.

Elvis is a hit. It's also a really entertaining, well-made movie. Word of mouth has propelled this movie into a slow-earning behemoth. It's the second highest grossing movie director Baz Luhrmann has ever made (behind The Great Gatsby) and the 12th highest grossing movie of 2022.

"Audiences came to hear all their favorite Elvis tracks, but they stayed for the visually stunning direction, deep thematic darkness, and brilliant performances. Butler simply owned the role of Elvis. He nailed the puppy dog naivety of the legend while bringing such a somber human layer to the singer that will just break your heart. That’s only exacerbated by Hank’s disgustingly sinister performance as Elvis’ manager Colonel Tom Parker. It’s one of the best villain performances in recent memory and, by the time you get to the end of the film, both performances will make your jaw hit the floor."
