jardiance vs januvia

i recently lost abt 40 lbs which lowered a1c dramatically. my endocrinologist called as soon as she got the results and stopped my lantus immediately. later that week my primary md took me off of januvia and started jardiance.

within days my appetite went to zero with nausea and weakness with a little dizziness. i stopped the jardiance and messaged the doctors to let them know. they are, of course, supportive and we are now monitoring the situation. blood sugar is a little higher but considerably more variable .

anyone else taking jardiance? how is it working for you?

My Type 2 illness was well under control with, first, Metformin, then with Metformin plus Januvia and then with those two plus Jardiance. In fact, my A1c went down farther with all three, as you might expect. But after 2-3 years on Jardiance it went TOO low, so my doctor cut the J dosage in half. Equilibrium once again. Free to be me! But, a couple months ago, disaster: I developed a terrible, painful fungal infection in my urinary tract. Anti-fungal treatments (oral and topical) cured that after a month but the doctor looked at the lab reports and said: This is a common side effect of Jardiance. So I'm taking you off.

Now my readings have gone back up. He thinks he can control with other dosage adjustments which we'll discuss next visit. Meanwhile, I'm relearning how not to be carefree about diet and exercise. Januvia like Jardiance helped me drop weight. On both together I went down to my high school weight (about a 20-25 lb loss). On Januvia alone, I'm gaining some of that back.

This disease has a way of progressing over time. This has resulted in me doing very well with diet and regular exercise to having to add Metformin, then Lantus and finally multi daily injections (MDI). I still am very careful about what I eat and do daily exercise.

My endo and I have some concerns about kidneys. These SGLT2 inhibitor drugs can help protect kidney function. I have several concerns, one causing the kidneys to excrete glucose seems to be a recipe for urinary tract infections. Bacteria love to grow in glucose rich medium. And yeast as well as you found out.

The other thing is possible weight loss. I have been steadily losing weight since I started MDI. Recently I weighed the same as when I was 15-16 years old. I really don’t need to lose anymore. There is another drug, Kerendia, that may offer kidney protection that is not a diabetic drug. I need to check if it is in my insurance’s formulary. Oh if only doctors had more power to treat us than insurance companies.

Keep up the diet and exercise.

the minimum dose of Metformin and was doing fine on that. I did want to lose some weight, though, my doc agreed I could stand to lose some, thus Jardiance. It has already helped me lose 15 pounds already. I was a bit nauseated the first few days and I had a couple of lows, but I just added some healthy carbs (beans, oatmeal) to counteract the lows. I haven't had any UTIs, but I was warned to watch out for them.

I do wonder about the dizziness -- I hadn't connected my occasional feeling of being "off-balance" for a second or two, especially when bending over, with my taking Jardiance. I'll have to report that to my doc.

Januvia gave me a giant rash and had no effect on my blood sugar

Jardian made me too nauseous to eat anything so both my weight and sugar levels went down but that wasn't the way it is supposed to help.

I had to stop both medicines within a few weeks.
