4. A friend in college who lived in the Canal Zone brought back a pound of Panama Red

after Christmas break.

9. My story, Early 70s, my dealer, making a house call, reached into his attache case...

and produced a bag, that he offered as a bargain, of seedy shake. And it was a consistent rusty red. It was seedy (wish I had those) but the shake was from the processing of the buds, and was quite good.

We're going to be around pretty much except for maybe some short camping trips. We're going to be down on the peninsula for Salmonfest August 1-2 (Emmylou Harris and Rodney Crowell performing) and I've got a photo excursion to the north slope for auroras from August 27-31, but other than that, nothing is set in stone.

I had a couple grams a month or so ago. Good stuff, though not my usual kind of strain.

6. The Durban Poison of today is not the Durban Poison of 1976

I was there and I've had both.

DP has been contaminated by Indica crosses today. It was commercialized in the 80s and the lower ripening times by crossing with Indica was worth too much money.

The same holds true for most Mexican, Central American, and Columbian land races. There are few pure examples left.

13. The best smoke of late 60s and early 70s

Was a black Afgan hash with lines of of white mold in it. Had to be very careful not to take in too much and try to hold it. You'd start a cough that started out slow and ended up sounding like a machine gun.

I know of at least a dozen pure landrace strains of Afghani that made their way to the US.

The highest quality hashish from them is always dark brown to black.

Like all of the old sativas, growers no longer want to wait the 4.5 to 6 months it takes to properly ripen a good sativa, so they interbreed with indica to shorten the ripening time to 1.5 to 2.5 months.

Yes, that Columbian gold *might* be a landrace strain.

Emphasis on *might*. More than likely it's a Columbian Gold plant that was crossed with the Dutch standby, Skunk#1 (which is a cross between Mexican, Columbian, and Afghani, at about a 75% sativa/25% indica). The Skunk#1 provides a stability and a hybrid vigor as well as allows it to be grown indoors more easily with a quicker ripening time. True Columbian Gold typically takes between 16 and 24 weeks of flowering to ripen. The listed time is 10 - almost 13 weeks on that strain.

The underground cannabis seed trade is not known for it's accuracy in describing genetic backgrounds. You have to be very cautious and also be skeptical of everything. I know World of Seeds (the seedbank that allegedly breeds that Columbian Gold) has a bad reputation on some of its landrace strains, especially since they provide feminized "landrace" seeds, while another company called The Real Seed Company is known for traveling to various areas of the world to collect the pure landrace seeds they provide (which is a different lineup every year). Currently, most of their lineup is Himalayan based Charas strains, thought there is a Lebanese hash strain in their current lineup. You never know what they'll collect next year.

Because shortening the ripening time equated to more money more quickly, the original pure sativa was adulterated with indica.

There are pockets of the pure sativa Durban Poison, but you cannot depend upon the strain name to know it's the pure original.

I know some guys who are currently attempting to look at the DNA of as many strains as possible. They have access to some of the original landrace strains before hybrids became so popular in order to drive more financial gains and they are attempting to compile a complete database of genetic information for the strains due to the multiple poly-hybrid nature of today's cannabis.

It's rare to find anything pure these days. Many heirloom varieties are truly lost forever.

Keep in mind, I'm not saying what is sold as Durban Poison is not good. In fact, all of the newer Durban Poison I've imbibed has been tremendous. I just can tell it's been adulterated with indica since the late 70s. I have had an example of an illicit Durban Poison about a decade ago that was still pure, though, so I know it's out there somewhere. It's quite possible what you get is also a pure Durban Poison, too.

The 70's. Those times when someone says that they have something that is so special we all have to get together to try it. I'll never know what they were. But I had forgotten the times in different places with different people where something amazing came around. I never thought to even...well I didn't even know what sativa or indica was yet.
