Bernie Sanders
Related: About this forumJust back from breakfast with a group of senior citizen friends and acquaintances
At 70 I'm the youngest in the group, and I found it interesting that when the talk turned to politics, while one person declined to discuss it at all, everyone else was eager to point out their enthusiasm for Bernie Sanders. So not all of us old farts are Republicans or Hillary supporters.
Just thought you should know that.

(30 posts)I live in western South Dakota, a red hotbed, but I have a lot of FB friends, and like me they are in their 60's, and they are almost universally for Bernie. It is not only the millennials going for Sanders.

(28,960 posts)We also remember when working class men and women were respected. When unions were respected. When accomplishments besides making obscene amounts of money were respected.

(75,480 posts)one day a week. I find both seniors and the Millenials are very enthused about Bernie. I even had an eighty five year old woman come in to buy a button and make a contribution to the campaign.

(41,600 posts)Bernie is the ONLY candidate who has said he will protect Social Security and Medicare! That has always been THE main issue for senior citizens! Boomers are now retiring and younger boomers will soon be retiring. I do not believe she has the senior vote. AND he's going after Big Pharma so they can buy their meds without being raked over the coals paying exorbitant prices. Nope. She cannot be ahead in the senior vote.
Older women, maybe, but not the senior population as a whole.

(16,401 posts)These are such huge concerns to women of the 65+ and early boomer generations. I know Hillary has s aid she won't cut SS but she hasn't said anything about COLAs or Medicare as far as I know, and I still don't trust her to keep her word.

I think that many of these polls have it wrong.

She said, "I like him. I really like him (Bernie)!" That is the reaction of a lot of people, although not to many are talking elections yet.
This is a very red part of Florida, folks, and the only 2016 bumper stickers I've seen around here have been one for Hillary and three or four for Bernie... No 2016 bumper stickers for Republicans yet (although plenty for past elections years). The disturbing thing is that a lot of young (12 to 20 year olds) are singing Trump.

(73 posts)Both my daugheres (25 and 29) are for Bernie. The younger is more political than the older and she considers herself a feminist. She feels a bit bad that she isn't supporting the woman in this race, but as she said, "Policy trumps gender for me, Mom." I agree. . .

(16,254 posts)Granted, there were college-aged young people, but I was surprised to see how evenly the group was spread from young to old.
On Hillary's side, the older people were mostly women, but the rest were also spread across the board from young to middle-aged.
I think it is the media that concentrated on the younger people dominating Bernie's followers. It sure looks to me like he has the attention of all ages.

(2,304 posts)My husband (we've been together for six years now) just changed his registration to Democrat so that he could cast a vote for Bernie in our state primary (Florida)! He was a Reublican, but had voted for Obama both times...he realizes now that the policies of the other side are hateful.

(5,751 posts)they can't help being for Bernie (in the most part). Take away a minority of women that are voting for a vagina rather than a president, and older folk generally can't be fooled. There's an old saying out west, fool me once...... fool.. WE CAN'T BE FOOLED AGAIN!

Last night we got together with some friends who are in their 70s and 80s. Except for the couple who are delusional tea Baggers and who carry the constitution with them, everyone there was surprised to find that they ALL support Bernie and do not trust Hillary. The Baggers adore Cruz.

(1,321 posts)Hell, I'm 78; Bernie represents what is critically needed for this country! Guess my memory of both long past and current events allows me some first-person perspective. Way back when media was more balanced and somewhat less in service to the advertisers...when the business and editorial sides of a publication, print or electronic, were more "allowed" to be more independent from the ownership and each other. Yeah, there's something I miss about "the good ol' days."
The DNC is in a seriously isolated bubble, as is Mrs. Clinton.
Me? I've got a serious case of "The BERN!
