And besides, the kinds of colleges those kids go to wouldn't be in the "free college" network, I'm sure.
It doesn't mean Yale, Harvard and others would be free tuition colleges.

hopemountain
(3,919 posts)is he believes we don't have any business telling other countries how to govern themselves as long as people are not harmed. thus, he pointed out some of the good things from cuba - a stellar medical school, for example. if you don't know about their medical school, many med students from the u.s. and other countries attend this school. in addition, american physicians and other medical care providers from the u.s. have participated in the staffing of these schools as teachers - via mexico and other latin american countries during the travel sanctions.
retrowire
(10,345 posts)wasnt referring to a specific movement, bit rather painting the fact that Bernie praised some good things about how they ran their government as if Bernie supported all those bad things as well.
she was smearing as hard as she could essentially.
the transcript cleared that up for me.
hopemountain
(3,919 posts)TBF
(36,568 posts)From transcript:
Univision plays a tape of Sanders praising Fidel Castro. There are scattered boos from the audience.
Sanders skirts the issue of Castro. He says he was against U.S. military adventures in Latin America.
Clinton tries to make an issue of Sanders support for Castros Cuba. She also calls for Congress to relieve Puerto Ricos debt crisis. Sanders says that vulture capitalists should take a hit in the islands debt restructuring.
^ As a socialist myself (and arguably more left than Sanders) there are some things about Cuba everyone can envy. They did pretty well for some 50 years in a little country that was blockaded off. You could do a search about the doctors - the monthly review had a good article about that. Here is just one article I've read: http://mrzine.monthlyreview.org/2012/fitz071212.html MR is a socialist periodical that has written a lot (and done reviews of books) dealing with medicine in Cuba and Venezuela.
I doubt Bernie was praising authoritarian regimes (nothing in his record suggests he would do so) - like most of us in this country he really does want a democratic model. He also is likely very disgusted at the way US has overtly and covertly involved itself in Latin and South America. Hillary is very hawkish in this area (evidence - her love of Kissinger and his reactionary policies).
The loudest red-baiting I'm hearing is coming from the Clinton camp. But if he does run in the general we certainly will hear more. It's easy to debunk because we have Bernie's record for many years to look at. You can pull up Bernie on You Tube from years ago and he was saying the same things he's saying now. Remember also that calling someone a "communist" is what the right wing does. Hillary is trying to say he is this extreme person and she's not - but when push comes to shove they will use the same label on her because that's what they do.
retrowire
(10,345 posts)chknltl
(10,558 posts)...the population likes many of the things their government does for them? Sure, it would be great if Cuba was a democracy but Castro had done enough 4 his citizenry that it did not make sense to push for that populist overthrough....but we went 4 it anyway. Bernie thinks it best to allow countries to choose their own paths, to let the US lead by example. Instead, Kissinger's history with regime change has fostered much animosity directed our way. That is how i interpreted what Senator Sanders said and yried to explain in detail.
malletgirl02

(10,345 posts)God damnit here comes another meme, can we get the data?
TBF
(36,568 posts)I promise you that on any day of the week I and others (here in the socialist progressives group) have probably said more extreme things than Bernie ever has, and there aren't many folks I know of in this country who want an authoritarian model. Most of us are saying the same thing as Bernie - let's try redistribution, let's see what works in these Scandanavian and Latin America countries to see what we could improve here, at the most let's rein in corporations a bit so they don't have more power than people. No one wants a dictatorship. Folks like their religious and individual freedoms above all in this country and Bernie has shown he agrees with that and wants this process to be democratic.
What I need to find for you is some recent articles articulating Bernie's positions that are easy for you to use. I will work on this and bring it here to the Bernie forum.
retrowire
(10,345 posts)I read the transcripts and confirmed that Hillary wasn't referring to a specific movement.

Sanders will push the jobless future forward 15-20 years if he can make all education free through PhD level, but its inevitable, that by midcentury almost all jobs will be done by machines, and totally apolitical.. a local politician running for an elected office referred to our local community as consumers of his "product". when he was reminded that he would be "elected" and thus, "hired" by citizens who are his employers, he backtracked his verbiage. hillary needs someone to call her on this, too. we are citizens of these united states. we are the taxpayers and the employers and the government and its officials work for US.
