Bernie Sanders
Related: About this forumQuestion for fellow Sanders supporters
I have a close conservative friend who totally rejects Trump and Cruz. I think he voted for Kasich.
If Bernie doesn't win the nomination, but Kasich finagles himself into the GOP nomination, what differentiates Kasich and Hillary? My friend is a lifelong Catholic, conflicted about abortion, so choice ISN'T going to be a winning example.
What else is there?
Foreign policy / war?
Global warming? Maybe. Kasich isn't a denier, but he thinks "the EPA shouldn't regulate it."
Supreme Court nominees? More likely to get religious conservatives with Kasich, probably. Not sure who Hillary would pick, centrist on state power or economics, maybe more socially liberal?
Yeah I know I should be making calls for Bernie today, but I'm no good at it. So to make up for it, I promise I'll donate five extra bucks to Bernie tonight, for every decent answer I get today. "Decent" equals truthful, insightful, or otherwise deemed by me to be substantive comments.

(14,255 posts)Don't know about the war/foreign policy differences.
If I was going to guess, Kasich would be less interventionist, if only because it costs money.
Hillary is Third Way, Kasich is Third Way on crack.

(16,191 posts)Republican congress would pass a bill and Kasich would sign.
Hillary might threaten to veto the more egregious elements, offering compromise.

If your friend is a tea-party type who loves Reaganomics, or hates unions, or hates social programs that benefit the poor, he may find a lot to like about Kasich.

(16,191 posts)My friend liked Reagan and is suspicious of government waste.
Maybe Kasich pretends to be an affable moderate republican but is really a Tea Partier. Of course, pretending to be further left than you really are is in vogue this season.

(16,191 posts)I just googled each candidate's record on fracking and there's not a huge contrast. There are articles on Kasich getting collecting taxes from fracking and reducing sustainable energy efforts in Ohio, but Salon and Mother Jones have pieces on Hillary selling fracking to the world.
Wars? I can only assume they'd be similar.
Pollution might be a difference. I think Hilary's concern about lead in paint and in the water is genuine, and she would fight against pollution that disadvantages poor communities. Kasich would want to deregulate. Point there for Hillary.

(16,191 posts)I'm going for $20 for Bernie based on the above four responses... Which were either funny or earnest attempts at an answer. Anything else?
Wow. I really thought, and hoped, that there's be at least ten areas of clear contrast. Maybe it's just too hard to compare demonstrated positions of a governor to senator / SOS?

(3,859 posts)She might make history the deciding factor and that would be a good thing. I have no idea how likely that is, but it certainly seems plausible.
The big issue to me is that I think that Kasich would beat Hillary. Current polling corroborates that.
