Our Revolution Announces New Slate of Local Endorsements

9th March, 2017

WASHINGTON -- Our Revolution on Thursday announced its support for five candidates running for positions in local and state legislatures across the country.

“We must continue to fight for economic, social, racial, economic, and environmental justice—and this diverse group of progressive candidates have proven their commitment to the future of our country and their own communities,” said Executive Director Shannon Jackson. “We are proud to support these leaders, who are fighting at the grassroots level to respond to the needs of working families.”

Full list of candidates:

khalid kamau is running for South Fulton, Georgia’s city council. kamau helped organize the Atlanta chapter of Black Lives Matter and served as a field organizer for the Georgia House Democratic Caucus. In 2016, he was elected as an at-large delegate to the Democratic National Convention for U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders’ presidential campaign. kamau has spent his life on the front lines, having staged his first demonstration at the age of 13, to pressure his middle school to include African nations in their Olympic-themed “Field Day.”

Cheri Honkala is running for Pennsylvania State Representative in District 197. Honkala is well known for her work fighting homelessness and poverty in a district where many struggle to get by on less than two dollars a day. Honkala is co-founder of the Kensington Welfare Rights Union and the National Coordinator of the Poor People's Economic Human Rights Campaign – which represents a network of over 40 poor people’s organizations across the United States. In 2012, Honkala was the Green Party’s vice-presidential candidate alongside Dr. Jill Stein.

Jacqueline Traynere is running for Mayor of Bolingbrook, Illinois, as a proud lifelong resident. Traynere is currently serving her third term on the Will County Board and is an organizer for the American Federation of Government employees. Traynere is fighting to ensure that the increasingly diverse community of Boilingbrook is represented in their government, and has a leader who reflects the community’s values.

Louis Braatz II is running for at-large seat on the Lincoln, Nebraska city council. Braatz will focus his efforts on addressing income inequality, eminent domain, bicycle advocacy, and food program for residents.

Heath Mello is running for Mayor of Omaha, Nebraska. Mello served as Chairman of the Appropriations Committee in the Nebraska legislature for District 5, earning a reputation as a leader who could build consensus on both sides of the aisle to pass meaningful reforms and provide significant relief for working families.
