There will be a lot of familiar faces at the 18th annual Vermont Democratic Party Curtis Awards on May 5 in Burlington, including keynote speaker Senator Bernie Sanders and Democratic stalwarts Senator Patrick Leahy and Congressman Peter Welch. Attending the political gala for the first time, however, will be members of the migrant farmworker community and advocates from Migrant Justice, who are attending as guests of former legislator Kesha Ram and local business owner Trevor Crist.

Migrant Justice is a statewide advocacy organization dedicated to organizing the farmworker community for dignity and human rights. Organization spokesperson Enrique Balcazar was detained along with Zully Palacios last month by Immigration and Customs Enforcement. They were both released on bail and have upcoming hearings.

Balcazar and Palacios will be among those in attendance at the Curtis Awards. “We are honored to be included in this event and to be able to shed light on the struggles of the immigrant community in Vermont. We need to work together to support the organizing efforts of some of the most vulnerable Vermonters to step out of the shadows and access economic justice and human rights,” said Balcazar.
