Bernie Sanders Plans To Dramatically Alter Social Security (for the BETTER)

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) announced his candidacy for the presidency on Thursday with the goal of promoting progressive polices to reduce income inequality, climate change, and the influence of big money in American politics. Sanders hopes to inject his solutions into the national political conversation and shift the Overton window on a host of domestic and international priories.

Chief among them is Social Security, a program he describes as one of the “most successful government programs in American history.” However, without changes — benefit cuts or tax increases — the fund that maintains Social Security won’t be able to pay-out all of its obligations by 2033, leading lawmakers to propose a series of solutions to extend the program’s solvency. Sanders has long warned against prescriptions that would cut benefits or slow their growth, upending Washington’s consensus that government needs to cut entitlement programs to keep them sustainable. Instead, he has proposed legislation to expand the program.

Below is a look at how the different proposals to alter Social Security from various declared and undeclared presidential candidates would impact the decades-old program:

Currently, anything over an annual income of $118,500. Pays nothing into social security. Even if it was increased to $200k, it would allow for a much longer life of payment.

To have millionaires give 7.5 percent of their income and get a 2200 dollar check seems a bit to much. However most millionaires take stock options and other bennies to make it look like they are not paid. Also isn't it insane that Congress gets a raise starting in August when SS stops being taken out. That is tragic.

But millionaires have so many tax incentives and such. They get so much free money it's ridiculous.

I agree about the check. I don't know how people live on social security. And if they want even a fairly decent health insurance, that check is diminished greatly

Senator Sanders would need a Congress but at least voting for Sanders would ensure zero cuts cuz he would never sign anything with cuts. Getting his proposals through Congress would be a wonderful thing. How he would do that? I am sure he would put forth 100 percent effort.

But come 2018, because of him, we'll be back to a democratic house and Senate. And Bernie would use that!

I admit when there was some talk of him running six months ago. I rolled my eyes and thought what a joke, BUT I have really paid attention and love the thought of a President Sanders.....I have evolved 100 percent!

I was excited with President Obama but for different reasons. With President Sanders it is finally someone who will look after the American People. I think we have been "beaten" down for so long that we are actually shocked that someone would look after us. It is thrilling.

That's why I think with momentum and continued enthusiasm, we could break through the idea that "Sanders can't win." In poll after poll, we see the American people support liberal policies. But then we swallow the propaganda that center-right policies is all that can be achieved or approved by the electorate. It's been a good game for corporations and their bought politicians. We need to take the red pill and wake up.
