BURLINGTON, Vt., May 10 – U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) announced that he will hold a Veterans Town Hall and Resource Fair on Saturday, May 19 at Norwich University. The event will highlight national, statewide and local resources for Vermont veterans and their families.

The event will begin at 10 a.m. with coffee, networking and a veterans’ resource fair. At 11 a.m., Sanders will address the attendees, touching on national veterans’ issues. There will also be a panel discussion with Vermont representatives from the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Vietnam Veterans of America, The American Legion, Vermont Veterans Outreach Program and the VA.

About 150 veterans and friends of veterans turned out to discuss veterans’ affairs and problems. The Senator had a staff at the meeting to listen to veterans’ concerns and promised that his office would assist in any way possible.

Excerpt:

Senator Sanders made his way across campus that morning, first stopping for a visit with the creators of a Wheel Pad. Student innovators and craftsmen here at Norwich University have designed and built a 200 sq.ft. accessible bedroom and bathroom that can be attached to an existing home, providing eco-friendly temporary housing for people with mobility issues.

Upon arriving at Plumley Armory around 10:15 a.m., he individually greeted the staff and volunteers working at each table, spoke with veterans and family members seeking services and information, and generously posed for photos with anyone wishing to shake his hand. As staff from his Senate office interviewed veterans and service providers, to bring information back to Washington, D.C. directly from Vermont veterans, Senator Sanders offered support to each organization by providing the platform for them to speak directly with community members about the services they provide.

Senator Sanders lauded the “very impressive idea” of the Wheel Pad, which he recognized as one example of many innovative local ideas being presented to solve problems facing Vermont veterans, as “students here in Northfield were involved with the design.”

When he began to speak to approxiately 150 attendees gathered together at about 11:00 a.m., first and foremost, Senator Sanders wanted “to thank all the men and women here who have put their lives on the line for our country.” He then invited everyone in attendance to ask questions, and to explore the many options and opportunities available from each organization present, explaining: “What we want here is for you to learn as much as you can … do not be shy, that’s what this meeting is all about.”
