New automatically registered voters through DMV in Oregon. You still need to declare a party!

You will get mailed a card in the mail afterward asking you to check which party you want to affiliate with. Otherwise, you will remain an NAV voter status which will keep you from voting in the primary for Bernie.

What if I don't want to register to vote?

You don't have to. The state will send you a postcard telling you that you will be registered unless you check the box saying that you don't want to be. (You can also select a political party at this time.)

If you don't send in the card with the box checked, you will be registered. You have three weeks to mail it back.

...

What if I want to register or change my mind about my party, and I don't want to wait for the next time I renew my license?

You can go online to register or change your information at any time You may also make any necessary changes at your local county clerk's office. Voter registration is not dependent on having a driver's license or government identification card.

Since Bernie's primary supporters will likely be young people being registered for the first time when they get drivers' licenses now, we need to make sure that they understand this and not to skip the second step! A lot of other states are looking to put in place like Oregon is with this as a model, so we need to make sure that we are aware of the process that gets people automatically registered and ensure that they get registered as Democrats and not as "not affiliated" status voters.

Since this has been the first time this newer way of registering voters has been tried, we need to make sure that those being registered understand this process completely. Many will just ignore it, or not realize things aren't being done to help them be registered properly to vote for Bernie when the time comes, and perhaps when it is too late then.

Voters have until April to register or change their voter registration for the primaries in Oregon. They should also be aware that this election will be the first year when a third party (the Independent Party) will be showing up with primary ballots too. This party isn't what it sounds like it is, and young people should be made aware that even though Bernie is an independent running, that they should be registered as a Democratic Party and not an Independent Party voter here in Oregon to vote for him in the primaries.

There is no such thing as the Democrat Party. It is the Democratic Party.

I apologize for the pedantry, but the Republicans and their followers tend to use "Democrat Party". And Rush tends to use that name exclusively.

Please correct. Thank you.

My regards.

I think originally I put in registered as a Democrat or independent and added party when I sought the need to put in party to identify the "Independent Party" properly which many here will feel is different than what some think of as "independent" or NAV (Non-affiliated voter) status. Missed updating the spelling to spell out our party name properly. Not my intent!
