Hillary Clintons major donors want her to show more fire in Tuesday night's Democratic presidential debate to halt Bernie Sanders grass-roots momentum and populist fundraising appeal.
But the Vermont senators campaign sees the debate as a major opportunity to cash in, campaign sources tell POLITICO, and, if recent precedent holds, it could yield a multimillion-dollar surge from activists giving $10 or $20 each.
With both candidates set to release fundraising totals later this week, small donors have provided the overwhelming majority of the $41 million raised by Sanders through the end of last month a tally thats expected to exceed every campaign except Clintons. Her campaign pulled in $75 million between mid-April and the end of September. But a much larger percentage came from donors who each gave close to $2,700, which is the maximum that any one donor can contribute for the primary election.
Clintons big-money backers contend she could tap into the small-donor fervor behind Sanders and fire up her own base if she displayed more emotion on the debate stage, according to POLITICO interviews with 10 leading donors and fundraisers who work closely with the Clinton campaign. They see her best approach as a tricky balance between reaching out to Sanders populist base, while still casting herself as the most electable Democrat ― which means also aggressively rebutting Republican attacks over her private email use.
Theres a deep hunger for more action and more fire in belly, and lots of worry all the energy is with Bernie, said a major Clinton bundler in New York. Everyone is talking about that, said the bundler. While noting that most major donors still dont see Sanders as likely to win the Democratic nomination, the bundler added, Donors are the base, and they like red meat the same way the activist wing of the party does.
Donors and bundlers are all momentum people like everyone else.

Then why are the major donors worried?
I think the Clinton Campaign has internal polls that show this race could be a repeat of her 2008 campaign and the donors have the same poll numbers.

(41,600 posts)More than likely dismissal and her donors are getting nervous. Their gravy train might dry up! Oh noes! I might have to close my FOR PROFIT prison! Oh noes! I might lose that lucrative FRACKING contract! Oh noes! My Wall St. Buddies and I might have to pay taxes on some transactions! Oh noes!
They might have to help their country and actually pay taxes on the billions of dollars they hide overseas! Oh noes!

(36,392 posts)Nothing she says comes from the heart - it's all programmed "centrism", trying to win an election instead of wanting to implement a vision of change for the nation. You have to be really dim to believe she's actually "evolved" on gay marriage, TPP, war in the ME, healthcare. etc. No one changes their mind on gay marriage at age 65. Most people know she's just saying what she thinks people want to hear.

(592 posts)as a woman in politics, Hillary can't cry often, maybe once or twice. Holding emotions in check like this HAS to give you a bit of a robotic persona. Imagine if she cried as often as John Boehner or even made some of the odd off the cuff statements of Joe Biden? What would people say about her then? She is too emotional to be President....while John Boehner is just sensitive. Or, she's a bit crazy vs. lovable?
I think as a woman, she has a very unfair, tough time with her demeanor, but that it isn't her fault.
Now, talk about her policies and evolving? I'm glad she has evolved, most people do, but I personally give the edge to candidates who have been ahead on issues (visionary), or who have been consistent (unshakable ideology) vs. people who have come to see the light over time or like to thread the needle re policy.

(592 posts)but honestly, in this space I don't have time to list them all and give examples....consider it a polling sample lol
I am just not going to bash Hillary for something I find a little sexist, plenty of other things to go after her for.

I share your reservations about Mrs. Clinton's change of heart, though.

Hillary Clinton fighting back tears after being asked how she keeps going. She's down in the polls and now it's time to turn on the emotional blackmail. This is nothing more than yet another blatant attempt to "reinvent" herself and to try to make herself appear more warm and personal. Everything these Clinton's do is very carefully calculated and focus group tested. If you recall back in the 90's during the Clinton administration everything was polled and focus group tested, from where the Clinton's spent their vacation to the color of Bill Clinton's hair.
