When I was younger, I used to ridicule without mercy "working class" people who voted Republican.
"How can you vote AGAINST your own Economic Interest?", I would ask pointedly.

a few years later, the "Centrist" DNC and Party Leadership is asking me to do the same.

(15,359 posts)Republicans have it, especially with SCOTUS appointments coming up.
Still I'm feeling that if we pass up the chance to get a man like Bernie elected, we'll pretty much have whatever happens coming to us. More like the people responsible for any other outcome will deserve what they get, and have screwed the rest of us.
It could be that if we can't have Bernie, it'd be better to say fuck it and let it burn. Maybe that's what it will take? Really hit bottom with a total RW takeover to make people wake up. I hope not.

(23,156 posts)is that most people are guided by fear and ignorance, and have no clear understanding of the issues. And here I'm referring to all who are not wealthy but vote for Republicans. They believe someone is going to take away their guns, or that if woman can control their own bodies somehow everything will be ruined, or if "those people" are actually allowed to vote, to send their kids to our schools, to take jobs a way from decent (meaning white male) Americans, and because they have these genuinely stupid beliefs, they can be persuaded to vote against the party and politicians who will force gun control, legalized abortion, voting rights for all, and so on.
Another problem at the top end, is that those who are in the top 10% are doing quite well, but do not get that they are not in the 1%. Not to mention, a lot of embittered people below the top 50% are convinced that they only reason they're not rich is because of those nasty liberals who have destroyed this country.
erronis
(23,881 posts)Most of the middle class (and upper-lower, lower-upper, whatever) are in a zone where they can get by. Add 1% here, take off 1% there. They'll probably still have housing and food and a new car every few years.
If these "middle-class" voters became republicans or third-way democrats (neo-liberals) over the years, they probably won't change. They've voted THEIR values and the country is hanging in there, for THEM. Maybe not for their kids and grandkids, but that's way out there - their problem.
The top 0.1% (and I don't think it is 10%) are really quite fine with the situation. They can probably, for the next half-century, make sure they and their progeny can survive.
The ones at the bottom end of the economic scale have little voice. These may be 20-30% of eligible voters but they are either locked out or fed kool-aid by the elite. Buy more guns, blame the "others", keep yer women under control.
The difference between stupidity and genius is that genius has its limits.

(23,156 posts)These are people who don't get the larger picture, they only know that they're doing okay, and don't give a shit about anyone else. Which is much of why this country is such sad shape: "I've got mine, so screw everyone else."

He's not afraid to take a stand against the money and power that controls Washington and its politicians. We're lucky to have him running. We may not have another opportunity like this.
Hillary is more of the same. Only she's very well rehearsed. She's been packaged nicely with much help from the BIG money in politics. She's "Their" candidate. Not ours.

(2,450 posts)the upper, upper middle class is still hanging on but the threat of sliding is upon them. In terms of the short term and personal survival of their status, it's not necessarily a vote against their own interests. It's very hard to convince someone to see anything that might undermine their livelihood. Very. Hard.
Before long, if trends continue, the 1% are going to slide and the .01% will rule the roost. Just like the middle class did, they have joined the poor. Won't that be entertaining to watch?
But, I agree because it's against all of our interests because democracy requires we be in it together. Nobody benefits from a fragmented society - not if they are honest.

(39,215 posts)it is only a matter of time before they have all they can take from us and will started on the top 10% and when they have finished with them they will start fighting over the remaining money that is held by the 1%. Killing each other off. Greed has no natural limits.

(8,267 posts)but I am dismayed by your post, which encapsulates what almost everyone replying to this OP is trying to convey. I encourage you to understand the import of Bernie's campaign. At the very least, he has changed the political discourse in our nation -- for the better. I sincerely hope that -- if you are incapable of supporting Bernie --you will stop snarking and posting negative statements about him, and devote your energy to support your candidate.

This poster has 5 posts. Every one is negative to Bernie Sanders and/or his supporters. Going so far in one as to actually say, "Sanders supporters will be on suicide watch when he loses." And his response here his anti democrat.
We look at history before we block and respond. So while you think it's appropriate to hide smokey's response, I find it incomprehensible.
