That's what I was told by a journalist friend I knew who worked in Juneau during her brief governorship. In Alaska it was considered a hellluva good practical joke to get enough people together to write in a buddy's name for some office on the ballots to get him elected. And Sarah always played up her hotness with her pole dancer hair do, high heeled shoes and short, tight skirts.

I've traveled a lot and there's no place as breathtakingly beautiful.

A great way to see it, and comparatively inexpensive compared to flying or cruising is to take the Alaska State Ferry system along the marine highway. You start out in Northwestern Washington state (Bellingham) and go up along the coast of British Columbia. You can get off for short stays at any of the stops, and take day trips farther inland (Anchorage, Fairbanks, Denali) if you wish. Ferry stops include Port Hardy BC, Prince Rupert, Ketchikan, Wrangell, Petersburg, Sitka, Juneau, Whittier, Kodiak, Sand Point and Dutch Harbor (the last 2 in the Aleutians).

Traveling Alaska by ferry is an excellent option for independent travelers and families, and allows you to bring your car, RV, bicycle or kayak along for the ride.

The Alaska Marine Highway is Alaska’s state-owned ferry system, offering scheduled service to the Inside Passage, Prince William Sound, Kenai Peninsula, Kodiak Island and the Aleutian Islands. Ferries allow visitors to travel at their own pace and create their own itinerary. Cabins provide private, overnight accommodations, but you can also sleep in public areas on the ferries, including lounges and the outdoor solariums, in small tents or sleeping bags. Food service, movies and other entertainment are available on the ferries. It’s important to book ferry travel in advance, especially during summer months or if traveling with a vehicle.

With the money you saved traveling on the state ferry system, if you want one of the ultimate Alaskan adventures, you can fly from Anchorage to the Pribilof Islands (still part of Alaska). The islands are located approximately 300 miles west of the Alaska mainland in the North Pacific. They are famous for their natural beauty, large seal populations, and migrating birds. St. Paul Island (14 miles long) is home to the world's largest fur seal rookeries. Birders from around the world consider the Pribilof Islands a premier destination. Over 2 million sea birds nest there annually and it has the world's largest fur seal rookeries. My son spent a week there last October and raved about it.

The Pribilof Islands (formerly the Northern Fur Seal Islands) are a group of four volcanic islands off the coast of mainland Alaska, in the Bering Sea, about 200 miles (320 km) north of Unalaska and 200 miles southwest of Cape Newenham. The Siberia coast is roughly 500 miles (800 km) northwest. About 200 km2 (77 sq mi) in total area, they are mostly rocky and are covered with tundra, with a population of 572 as of the 2010 census.

Run up to the Iraq War: Sarandon used her own money to make an ad suggesting we should knowwhat Iraq did to us before we went to war in Iraq. I don't know how many times it ran. I saw it once.

I have referred to it many times since. An actress with no access to any info that is not publicly available knew Iraq had done nothing. Twelve year old Arab children knew Saddam and Ben Laden hated each other and would never have worked together to cause 911. Every Democrat I know knew Bush was lying and media was helping. The only Democrats who "believed Bush?" Mostly those who, at that time, had Presidential aspirations. That is some kind of arrogance. people should die because I don't want to take a chance on being embarrassed when I run for President. Heinous!

So I will let people like Ms. Sarandon and Women for Bernie speak to the issue.

Fri Jan 8, 2016, 08:57 PM

... and not so much for what he stands for. Probably most more hardline supporters of someone like Netanyahu are more inclined to support Hillary Clinton or Republicans than Bernie, because they know that Bernie won't be a big anti-Palestinian supporter they might be looking for in a president. Heck we have a black Muslim congressman in Keith Ellison endorsing Bernie for president! Does that play in to "identity politics"? I think that Ellison's endorsement is extra special, as it shows how both he and Bernie are more about shared principles than a shared religious identity or race between them.

And if we make it so much about campaigning for Hillary to get the first woman in as president, or if we were to even do the same for Elizabeth Warren (this time perhaps as Bernie's running mate), and ignore someone like Warren's populist stances that are popular with people like me and many others, then that's probably more apt to turn off a group of voters that do have misogynistic leanings, but who might vote for someone if the gender identity reason for voting for them wasn't emphasized so much.

Maybe as VP under Sanders? She would break the glass ceiling for VP. I'm NOT going to sway my support for her simply because, or despite the fact, that she would be the first female President. Absolutely ridiculous!
She's qualified, no doubt. But we need someone who will get things done for "we the people", the 99%! We need to consider the past record of individuals running for our vote, and she doesn't have such a great record to run on, with her close ties and support to Wall Street and "big money".
Bernie appears to be the far better choice....far better. If we can educate America that being "a socialist" is not something evil, to be feared. It is a label that describes someone who is for "we the people", and not "we the money people only".
Wake up America. Can we show the world we WANT better, and not just more of the same?

69. Integrity before Gender in 2016
Fri Jan 8, 2016, 08:33 PM
Jan 2016

I was thinking Howard Dean would make a good VP choice for Bernie, but I feel that Senator Warren has shown greater integrity by standing up against some of the most powerful bankers in Washington. So Warren is the better choice.

The fact that Warren is a woman is a great advantage in some respects, but it is secondary to her record showing integrity.

It may not have been all his fault, but many ways Obama let us down.

So I think voters value integrity more now.

The combination of Bernie and senator Ellison would shatter the rich, white, Christian mold and demonstrate to the world that America intends to lead it not rule it. It would also prove once and for all that the racist, bigoted segment of our population are shrinking and powerless and break their stranglehold on our political system. I anticipate that their would be a violent backlash from the extreme right, could cost many lives, but they would be branded as terrorists and dealt with accordingly. Even a blue tarp couldn't protect them. These insurrectors truly are America's own ISIS.

This election was rigged to please the people who wanted Hillary in 2008 because she was the woman. That is why so many here bleated out "lizzie ain't runnin" so that people would still be led along the path of, "who else ya gonna vote fer?" , which of course, is the only sales pitch that makes one buy and eat the crap sandwich in ordert to avoid starving. I wish Liz ran, I wish Gillibrand ran, Napolitano, Sibelius and any number of people that were more than qualified. But Debbie made sure her firend got all the airtime, even if it let the Trumps and Cruzes get the unopposed airtime that is their lifeblood.

Now, to repeat the unoffical (though you better believe it gets enforced) loyalty pledge, I will vote for the poison that makes me sick rather than the poison that willkill me, even if that dose is named Hillary Clinton. However, HRC better hope that there are a enough of the people she has insulted and screwed over the years who are willing to do that. Debbie just insulted the Milennials by sayimg they do not understand what it is like not to have access to abortion. Let's omit the fact that many of those Milennials are living in the Red states where a lot of Blue Dog Democrats actively joined the effort to support taking away their right to choose, the same Blue Dogs that get support from Hillary and Debbie and all those woodchucks that say "we gotta support these people." Part of the reason these Milennials support Bernie is because they know that Bernie will support abortion rights, as well as access to medical care, period, something that a lot of Milennials want. He is not, like Dennis Kucinich, someone who supported abortion rights because that is the way the wind was blowing. Perhaps instead of slamming Milennials, maybe Hillary can listen less to Debbie "i already lost three election campaigns" and listen to the people that will be the legacy of the Clinton and Obama years. Does Hillary want to play for the long game, or does she just wanto to say "I wuz da first wommin president", and otherwise be noted as either mediocre or worse, bad?

Really disheartening when the Edwards debacle started to unwind. I truly felt betrayed. There went our voice for the poor. I feel confident that sorta thing will not happen with Sanders. Bernie knows the plight of the poor very well.

was the best qualified for the job and I agreed with her policy proposals, I would have no problem whatsoever supporting and voting for her over any male competition.

In this particular race I do believe Bernie is by far what the nation most desperately needs at this point in our space time continuum.

Thanks for the thread, Playinghardball.

when to men are running against each other popular wisdom is women will vote for the taller candidate or the better looking one. They can't be trusted to look at actual policy proposals.

Susan Sarandon Is a favorite of mine.

I fell in love with her at the midnight Rocky Horror Picture Show.
Plus she has always been a strong progressive woman...hell she would make a good president.

92. A DUer made it.

It stands for a long-time DUer who was PPRed after posting a link to a story about people writing in Bernie instead of supporting Clinton. A link! They weren't even espousing it and, since this is the primary and we don't have a nominee, yet, most of us assumed we could post ideas that may not be in support of Clinton. Apparently not.

The DUer, LOonix, was a Bernie supporter and always had a little bug in his sig line. After he was banned, some Clinton supporters started posting sig lines with fly swatters smashing the bug, so Bernie supporters started posting tons of little bugs in their sig lines in support of LOonix. This one was made by another DUer in support.

As a woman, I feel the same way.

Reminds of the 2008 election when people accused Obama voters of only voting for him b/c he was black rather than because we knew he was the superior candidate.

I am with most women who think we are way past due for a female President.

However that doen't mean we should vote strictly on that wish. It has to be the right woman, like Elizabeth Warren. Some of us much prefer a truly progressive man over a product of DSW and the old DLC.

They can't stand it that Susan Sarandon is telling truth.

Of course she has been willing to take tough stances like bernie for what she believes in.That is something Clintons don't do.
