Christian Science Monitor on O'Malley's Candidacy

"Martin O'Malley broadens Democrats' field for 2016 White House race"

http://www.csmonitor.com/USA/Politics/2015/0530/Martin-O-Malley-broadens-Democrats-field-for-2016-White-House-race-video

Quoted in the article:

"Martin O'Malley's entrance into the race will be one more factor that incentivizes a race to the top on economic populism issues,” the Progressive Change Campaign Committee, which claims nearly one million members, said in a statement. “He has already taken strong stands in favor of debt-free college, expanding Social Security benefits, and Wall Street reform – and so far is the only candidate to be outspoken about accountability for Wall Street bankers who committed crimes and crashed our economy. The more Democrats compete to be the biggest hero on popular issues like these, the better it will be for Democrats and for America."

1. Good for the CSM! They are saying it like it is.

I hope lots of folks read it.

2. Some other quotes:

And as Politico puts it: “The run-up to his launch here could hardly have been worse, complicated in recent weeks by unrest in the city where he served as mayor and the unexpected early momentum of another Hillary Clinton challenger: Bernie Sanders…. who so far has captured the imagination of progressives looking for a Clinton alternative.”

Then there’s the recent unrest and riots in the city he once led over the death in police custody of Freddie Gray, an unarmed black man picked for what seems like a minor (or nonexistent) charge. “On Saturday, protesters blaming O’Malley for ‘police brutality’ continuously attempted to interrupt the speech with shouting and whistling,” Politico reports.

and this odd one:
In the Senate, Mr. Sanders caucuses with Democrats, although he calls himself a “democratic socialist” and is running for president as an Independent.
As an Independent? Errr.... no.

6. Thanks for your comments. Now be sure to read the positives about O'Malley too.

With regard to Bernie, the fact that the CSM is confused about his party affiliation should tell you that he ought to do something about that. He ought to clearly identify himself as a democrat. Just my advice, which he is free to ignore.

Just like present unrest in Baltimore, which should be laid at the feet of the present mayor and not O'Malley, continues to dog O'Malley, so the "socialist" label will continue to dog Bernie until he makes it clear publicly that he is a democrat. Or at least call himself a "socialist democrat" rather than a "democratic socialist." Nouns have priority over adjectives.

9. Me too. And thanks for your participation.

All of this is a learning experience and an adventure for me. I hope all of us like-minded progressives can help each other out in the hard work of getting past superficial impressions of things. Our greatest enemies are not each other, but uninformed opinions.

5. That's a strange comment.

The only candidate to be outspoken? Seems to me Bernie is also outspoken about Wall Street.

FWIW, I support both Martin and Bernie at this point.

8. O'Malley has called for prosecution of those responsible for crashing the economy.

Elizabeth Warren has done that too.

As O'Malley has said, you can get pulled over for having a broken taillight; but if you break the economy, you are untouchable.

4. Between his and Bernie's strong statements against the banks, Hillary is going to have to regroup.

I really support both of them, Martin and Bernie, and look forward to seeing where their policies differ.

I might have to make room in my sigline for a Martin graphic, because he's looking really good so far!

10. I could use a small O'Malley logo for my sigline, but I'm not sure how to do it.

Old brain cells are my problem, I guess.

15. Thanks. Anyone have the sign format he used at his announcement?

It read:

Rebuild the American Dream
O'Malley
For President 2016
MartinOMalley.com

light blue border and letters on a white field with red letters for the pres 2016 line.
