Guam Federation of Teachers votes on proposed teachers' contract

Public school teachers voted on a revised teachers' contract on Friday, weeks after Attorney General Elizabeth Barrett-Anderson returned the first contracts, citing concerns with involuntary transfers, work hours and the duty day, among other things.

The last time the Guam Federation of Teachers and the Guam Education Board had a valid collective bargaining agreement was six years ago.

Friday's union ratification will be followed by the education board's scheduled vote on Sept. 19, before the proposed contract is once again sent to the attorney general for review.

Barrett-Anderson had expressed serious concerns about a provision that allowed the contract to renewed indefinitely, and the parties agreed to put a five-year limit on the contract validity, from the date of implementation.
