CNMI House passes proposal to legalize marijuana use

SAIPAN – The House of Representatives on Wednesday passed a new marijuana legalization bill, which now goes to the Senate.

Rep. Joseph Deleon Guerrero reintroduced the measure as House Bill 20-178. The original version was introduced in the Senate by Sen. Sixto Igisomar.

Eighteen House members voted to pass the new bill while Rep. Donald Barcinas voted no. Vice Speaker Janet Maratita abstained.

Before it was passed, Rep. Ivan Blanco proposed to change the bill's name to the Taulumwaar Sensible CNMI Cannabis Act of 2018, while Rep. Vinnie Sablan proposed to reduce the number of the marijuana commissioners from nine to five. Both amendments were approved by the members.
