Trump approves typhoon bailout for GovGuam; residents still waiting

The government of Guam will receive federal financial assistance for its costs associated with Typhoon Mangkhut, and to be better prepared for future storms, but it is unclear if federal assistance also will be given to residents who suffered losses and damage, according to Guam Homeland Security.

President Trump approved Gov. Eddie Calvo’s request for a major disaster declaration, which means FEMA will pay part of the cost of debris removal, emergency protective measures, and impacts to roads, utilities, parks and public buildings, according to Homeland Security.

It also will provide funding to help Guam build back stronger, to reduce the risk to life and property from future hazards, according to Homeland Security.

Trump has not made a decision on whether FEMA should provide individual assistance to Guam, including money to rent temporary housing and money to repair damaged homes if insurance does not cover it. Individual assistance also can cover the replacement of clothing, vehicle repairs and the cost of items used for cleanup, among other things.
