New ballistic missile defense system sought for Guam
Four-star Adm. Phil Davidson, commander of the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command, has asked Congress for additional funding to create a new ballistic missile defense installation on Guam.
Adm. Davidson made the request in an unclassified March 22 letter sent to four congressional defense committees, according to a report in the United States Naval Institute News.
His letter does not specifically name China as the threat, but it stresses the need for the United States to maintain its strategic advantages in a region where Beijing has been expanding its military and economic influence.
In his letter, Davidson specifically asked for "a permanent and persistent land-based Integrated Air and Missile Defense (IAMD) system and associated weapon delivery system on Guam."
