will clean his clock, there is no need for purity tests, whatever that means, it is all about when we vote for an agenda that is the mandate to implement that agenda if we have a nominee that will not pursue, Healthcare as a right, ending our dependence on fossil fuels, clean renewable energy, fixing the wealth inequality, and providing real social justice in this country than what is the point ?

22. Why would it?

It is almost the opposite. Very rich parents buying admission by bribes in addition to having the money to pay legitimate expenses. Most of the free college proposals are limited to instate at state schools.

This actually happened in some cities or states in the past. In NYC, CUNY was once free or relatively inexpensive. Some of its colleges were very highly rated and it served as a path to the middle and even upper class for many bright, but not wealthy, students. In CA, there was an enviable free or near free university system until Reagan.

But, it was not just liberal coastal states. In the late 1960s, the tuition for an instate student at IU Bloomington was $195 a YEAR for as many credit hours as you chose to take ... And I didn't even pay that because I had a Hoosier scholarship that was designed to be the full tuition at IU for the 4 years I was there.

Now, even more than then, college is needed. Just as there is available free public school for K through 12, it is in our country's interest to have public college available to qualified students whose families can not afford it. ( I would think it fair if their were a sliding scale so families would pay as their income or assets increase.) By qualified, schools could define the level of competence needed to have a reasonable chance to succeed. For those who fail that, it might be beneficial to support remedial education outside college.

38. No, college is NOT needed more than ever. Companies are hurting for skilled technical workers.

And those jobs pay a good salary with benefits. This myth of needing college to be successful is what makes it so damn expensive. University systems raise tuition and other costs almost at will and its ridiculous. its a massive rip off. Not to mention graduating many people with degrees that wont get them into anyones front door.
The most successful people i know never graduated college. And all of them are worth over a million.

40. Your last sentence ...

For those who fail that, it might be beneficial to support remedial education outside college.

In California prior to Reagan (as you mentioned), it was free college to any state run school.
This included all UC schools, Cal-State schools and ALL JC's.
You were not guaranteed to get into the top UC or Cal-State schools, but if you got in
your tuition was free. Room & Board + books were not included, but tuition was still considered
the majority of the costs.

53. Reagan decided to get rid of this benefit ...

University of California system was created in 1868 with the decree that “admission and tuition shall be free to all residents of the state,” and the California State and community-college systems followed suit.

Another caveat is that being the frontrunner makes him a big target for the orange goon. There will also be attack ads paid for by the usual suspects (Americans For Plutocracy, etc.).

Yes, I know that basically a pairing is determined by the #1 and #2 vote-getters at the convention, but sometimes it is nice to conceive pairings for the best combination rather than #1/#2 for various purposes, perhaps one being attracting the most voters in the General to trounce the Minority President. And yes, Warren might take it all -- so many good candidates I have to wait before settling on who to support first.

54. Not sure where Nate Silver came up with that

Biden has been talking about free, 4-year public college; this from Forbes

Democrat: Joe Biden: Free College

Biden has called for four free years of public college tuition in 2015, when announcing that he wasn’t going to run in the 2016 campaign. He’s still talking about it, with a fairly detailed proposal he made in a speech last year. He thinks it would cost about $6 billion a year, and would increase the number of college students to 9 million. (I assume this means adding 9 million more a year, since there are already about 20 million students enrolled in higher education at any one time.) He’d pay for that through the tax code by eliminating something called the “stepped-up basis loophole,” which right now lets heirs evade capital gains taxes on inherited assets. I haven’t looked at his math, but for the moment let’s take his word for it that this would produce enough cash.

52. Folks

We have a very very long time to go. Things will change. Don't do a victory dance yet. Next year at this time all will be different.
