Baby did a bad, bad thing. Mayor Pete on political kill switches.

From the TIME Interview (video)

All of us do or say things that we might regret. And all of us can do better. When I came out, some of the people who had traded in the most insulting homophobic humor in the military with me were amongst the very first to reach and say, ‘Hey I’ve got your back’.

We have got to get away from this kill switch mentality that you see when someone puts a foot wrong or says something inartfully. You get this feedback - ‘I’ve always liked you, but you said this one thing and now you’re dead to me forever’.

This idea that we just sort people into baskets of good and evil ignores the central fact of human existence, which is that each of us is a basket of good and evil. The job of politics is to summon the good and beat back the evil.

I hate that many people see life in pure black and white. It’s ALWAYS more complicated.

The more you are certain people must be all good or all bad, the more you will flick the switch, and not only in one direction either.

If someone in the military has had experience that homophobic insults are common and that joining in seems to be expected to be part of the group and no one ever says anything different then most people will go along. (Most people believe they and people they know would never deliver sufficient shock to kill someone, but in Milgram’s obedience study most do.)

In friendship situations we all know that we are to be kind and supportive. It’s easy to hate a nameless, faceless “them” but the guy at work or your nephew who belong to a hated category are more likely to be treated decently than broad prejudiced beliefs predict.

political -- based on how we think we should solve problems -- some of it is fundamental and cannot be addressed by appealing to common humanity, as some people reject that concept entirely. To pretend that a problem based in racism is a "political" problem will make it very hard to run on and win on, much less solve in any useful way.

Even though Hillary won the popular vote, we can shoot for more Senate seats too. It doesn't mean "selling out" to Trumpsters, but helping the moderates who have strayed to the Republican side of the aisle see that there's more to offer on the left. That won't be easy as long as the economy continues humming under crooked Donny. We'll have to hope for some hiccups closer to election time.
