Jim Crows
Lasting Legacy
At The Ballot Box
Denying voting rights to
people with felony convictions
has roots in racist laws.

(29,322 posts)Until the 15th amendment then they created felony disenfranchisement so it is directly rooted in Jim Crow which is still around so this specific policy isn't sneaking back. It's already there.
Over 70 civil rights groups & the ACLU support the end of felony disenfranchisement so if that is his position he is on the wrong side of history.

(58,785 posts)support restoration of rights after sentences are served, but "have a conversation" for rights while in prison. Elections are handled at the state level, so I can understand not taking positions on this controversial issue unnecessarily. Buttigieg did -- he's against voting while in prison and for after.
For anyone who wondered why Bernie Sanders suddenly got passionate about this while blowing off almost all other issues PoC consider theirs, just remember Biden currently polls very high among PoC.
Fwiw, to me the vote is sacred and I've always been with the ACLU on this, and this expert:
"I think if you were starting with a clean sheet, you'd start with the idea that, in a democracy, everyone should have the right to vote. Rather, we're starting from a sheet that has centuries of racial oppression, class oppression, and a high degree of disenfranchisement, and so that's the status quo."
Start with federal laws protecting the voting rights of a large majority of felons during and after prison, which would eliminate patterns of prosecuting to disenfranchise. This could leave some flexibility for states to apply limits for some classes of crimes according to the wishes of their people.

(42,862 posts)Yes, please! This is a winning issue and an important issue. Honestly, I'd rather see this as a campaign centerpiece instead of a misguided obsession in giving voting rights to murderers, rapists and convicted paedophiles.
