For Those Who Are Pissed That Biden Is Doing Well:

How's Trump working out for you? Remember that last election? Were you pissed off then about Hillary getting the nomination?

How about climbing aboard the Democratic train, whoever is sitting in the locomotive? That's my recommendation.

Here's the deal: If you can get Bernie or Elizabeth the nomination, I guarantee and promise I'll vote for that nominee. How about you make the same promise if Joe ends up with the nomination? What do you say?

If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for:
Joe Biden

That criticism, in my case, will be advanced based on a) past performance and/or b) current statements/actions.

We don't need to nitpick here, but all of our candidates have flaws and the primary season is a good way of exposing these flaws so they can get beyond them in the general. AND, so we don't have any October surprises, like we did with the traitor Comey.

who the voters are. We are not a far left country. We are Center/Left. The Dems have to win fly over states too. There has always been far left voters, but somehow they think the majority of the country thinks like them. You have to bring the country along. Until we win the White House, Senate and House, far left issues won't see the light of day. So they should work with us to win and then work on their issues. Sat May 11, 2019, 03:46 PM
May 2019

A guy I went to school with was running as a republican to be our state house rep. In this case he was all about trump until the first primary debate, then he unloads a rant on FB slamming him. He said he must have been crazy to even consider handing him the keys to the nuclear arsenal, and much more. Then he jumps on the Fiorina bandwagon.

Of course when Trump gets the nomination, he's back to being a full-on Trumper, but I remembered that post. So I spent at least a half-hour scrolling back on his timeline to find that Trump bash. Then I commented on it and shared it. I praised him to high heaven for calling it, even said he was "prophetic"!

I waited until late at night too, hoping he'd be in bed and might not see it right away in the morning. I was wondering if one of his buddies might and even call him and wake his ass up over it! When I looked, I was unfriended and that was deleted! I sent him back a message telling him he should hire me as an adviser, because I would have told him to not take sides in the first place. Sure, after Trump had the nomination, but even then, don't go overboard. He didn't appreciate the offer. He was pissed because even though he saw the humor in it, in an election like that, just a few votes could have cost him.

He's going to have to earn the nomination, just like anyone else. I like him, and think he would probably win, walking away, but he's going to have to get the voted needed to win the nomination, just like whoever ends up as the nominee will have to do.

Right now, he's my choice. Show me how your choice can win the nomination and then the election, and I might just switch, if that candidate makes sense. But don't tell me that Joe would be a bad nominee. That's nonsense. Tell me why someone else would be better. I'll listen to your reasons. I can't guarantee I'll agree with you or that I won't point out reasons why not to choose that person, but I'll listen.

I hope you'll do the same.

about Biden's success, and I'm disagreeing with that. I think most are just pissed at the often-expressed idea that Biden is the only and inevitable choice.

I've watched Biden enter two previous Presidential primaries, so I'm not one who thinks his win is inevitable. Polls at this point are based on name recognition, but voters will get to know the other candidates better once the debates and primaries begin.

I have several candidates that I like a lot, and I'm waiting to see how they do in debates and primaries.

Exactly this. I'm pissed that some people are touting Biden as the only viable candidate for 2020 at this early stage, when we having even had a public debate yet. It's too early to call a winner.

I also get annoyed that valid criticism of candidates are labeled as attacks and denigration. Unrelentingly happy happy is idolatry, not party loyalty.

So, in answer to your question... no, you're wrong.

I simply agreed with pnwmom's assessment that because of Joe's poor showing in those two previous Presidential primaries, he certainly can't be viewed as inevitable in this, his third primary election run.

You can find the truth in many places on google or elsewhere. Joe Biden has never lost a single primary, ever. Perhaps you should look into it sometime, or maybe re-examine your idea of what a primary is?

When (if) you do, let us know which specific primary he lost. As I asked earlier, was it:

Nope, none!

You do know that the word primary can be used to describe the preliminary election process for nominating a party's winning candidate to run in a general election against another party's winning candidate?!

That's exactly the context in which pnwmom correctly used the term "primary" in the post to which I responded... here's the quote from pnwmom in case you missed it: "I've watched Biden enter two previous Presidential primaries, so I'm not one who thinks his win is inevitable."

Indeed, that's right... Joe DID enter two previous Presidential primaries - as noted, in 1988 and 2008 - and lost (badly) both times. The fact that Joe didn't last long enough to contest any of the states you mention in those two Presidential primary elections is irrelevant to the point I was making in response to pnwmom's post.

If, however, you'd like to respond on the merits of what I was saying in response to pnwmom, rather than playing silly word games, I'd be pleased to engaged in a serious conversation.

Nobody is a sure bet right now, we have long way to go before the first caucus, and primaries. Right now I like Harris, and Inslee, but no matter what I WILL vote for the nominee.

A lot of things will change when the debates start, and people have the right to disagree with whoever is the front runner at any time, as well as other candidates you might not agree with. Thats what democracy is all about. We can disagree without going with the "scorched earth" tactics that were used in 2016 here on DU.

Sadly it seems that "negative threads" get more traction around here than positive Threads. I do wish that would change.

At this point, he and Bernie are at the top because of name recognition. Until voters start to watch the debates and vote in the primaries, we don't know who is going to rise to the top.

At this point in 2015, Jeb Bush looked like a shoe-in. That, again, was based on his poll ratings, which were high because of name-recognition.

If anything I think a lot of people are frustrated that so many people are latching onto him as if he's the second coming of Jesus here to deliver us all from Trump. There are many people are only supporting him because they think he's a sure thing when otherwise they would not even entertain supporting him. It's cool to support him IF he is the nominee...but ignoring so many awesome candidates to do so is foolish. There are many candidates who can beat Trump and it's sad to see what appears to be so many settling for less than what they really want.

I don't dislike Biden. I love his memes with Obama and will vote for him if he's the nominee, but I won't likely do more than that. To me, he represents a vote against Trump but not a vote FOR anything.

The only way to determine who is best to beat Trump is to actually get to know all of those running first...not calling it by default before the first quarter of the game even starts. American who wants the Republic to survive intact, this should be a no-brainer: Democratic victory 2020.

We're not only voting for a candidate/nominee this time out, we're voting to save the country and our Western Alliance. There's no hyperbole involved with that statement. The evidence is all around us--norms shattering, the Rule of Law dismissed, our allies rebuffed while Trump cozies up to dictators, etc.

We either vote for the country and for our Democratic nominee, whoever that turns out to be. Or we watch the country go up in flames.

As I said, it should be a no-brainer.

Currently, Joe Biden is the clear leader in the polls and I support his candidacy. But campaigns being as unpredictable as they are? Things could change. I will absolutely vote for the Democratic nominee in 2020. No excuses, no exceptions.

There's a huge chance the race will be different by the time voting starts than it is now.

even though some of their views differ greatly with Bernie's. That diversity of views, as will be articulated in the upcoming debates, will give voters in this Democratic primary race many options and, presumably, out of those options, the BEST candidate will emerge. If that's Joe Biden, so be it!!

I'm fairly sure, however, it'll be Bernie, or maybe Elizabeth, who comes out on top - I obviously think they would make a great ticket... in EITHER order - but, regardless, we ABSOLUTELY MUST support the eventual winner of the primary with every fiber of our being to defeat that POS who currently occupies the White House!!

This country will not survive another 4 years of tyranny... and just imagine the mess the Traitor-in-Chief would make of the Supreme Court for DECADES if he prevails and we lose another Justice who's on our side.

I don't want to even consider the possibility... the loss in 2016 to that fuckin' maniac still hurts beyond belief!! WE HAVE TO WIN AT ALL COSTS!!

as some of them are. I think the sooner the ridiculously large field is winnowed down to a reasonable number - maybe about five - the better, because time and money won't be wasted on lost causes and vanity candidates. The party and the voters can start organizing behind a few solid candidates; there can be meaningful debates among a few, not beauty pageants for dozens who shouldn't have been there in the first place. So I hope Joe and a handful of others collect solid long-term support so we can start getting serious about booting Trump's ugly orange ass out of the WH and begin fixing all the things he broke.

Sat May 11, 2019, 04:58 PM

I do find it odd you use Hillary as an example. Are you asking if some were pissed BEFORE or AFTER the election?
I think most of the anger was first directed at Comey, then the MSM news shows, then Putin and GOP trolling and voter suppression. But after that?...perhaps there was a shaking of the head by some Sanders supporters that, like everyone else, thought Hillary would win. And hung onto that fact as the saving grace of their perfered candidate not winning. And that she didn't (technically) was exasperating.

If Sanders had actually won the nomination, (just imagine) as a Hillary supporter, would you describe your feelings as "pissed"? Dissapointed maybe. Concerned perhaps. (Especially if that loss came along with leaks how the DNC was working for him, and had plans to sabotage Hillary's chances if she got close).

I think its only natural that Sanders supporters were not happy. Those that could not rectify their feelings left the site. The ex-Sanders supporters that have remained, like myself, have learned to live with all that plus the ongoing nasty comments about someone you respect enough to support them for President. Add to that the belief that, going by the polls, we believed that Sanders would have beaten Trump, and thus saved us all of this nightmare, plus things like the SCOTUS. How would you feel if that happened to your preferred candidate?

But if you are asking are the DUers here that support more progressive candidates 'concerned' that we may nominate a candidate that is cut in almost the same cloth as the Clintons? Sharing not only a close friendship, but much of their third way, more conservative status quo approach? And thus might be brought down by not only a surge of Trump voters egged on by freshly invented "scandals", linking him to "corrupt Hillary", but also by lack of support from the left by a perceived disenfranchisement of a younger, and more progressive base, that once again would feel left out? (whether warranted or not)? Perhaps. But only because those people's ultimate desire is to have Democrats win, and win the most they can. And they have a different opinion on who would accomplish that goal.

How's Trump working out for you? Remember that last election? Were you pissed off then about Hillary getting the nomination?

The first two questions are so obvious as to be not worth asking.

The third question doesn't work as a recommendation for an older establishment Democrat.

The overall tone of your post is divisive.

Anyone on this board who won't vote for the D nominee doesn't belong on this board. If your intended target is rightwing trolls, I'm not sure what you hoped to accomplish.

For the record, I like Joe Biden but he won't get my support in the primaries because in October 2002 he voted to give GW Bush authority to invade Iraq (same reason I wouldn't support Kerry or HRC) and also because he would be 82 years old at the end of his first term.

Also for the record:

The horse race at this stage holds no interest for me whatsoever.
It's way too early.
Let's focus on the issues and see who emerges as someone who can both defeat Trump and lead our party into the future.

Don't misconstrue criticism of one candidate for anger: here's my trouble with Biden as a candidate: His name recognition has some of the potential undecided's turned off, via media bashings (unfair all, but...) he's received in the past.
Having heard the following candidate in a few online speeches now, and his sorely needed ability to snap back a quick, highly effective retort to a jibe: I'm hoping the candidacy goes to:

I'm also not sure that being "pissed that Biden is doing well" necessarily equates to actions that resulted in Trump winning in 2016. I'm sure there's some crossover between the anti-Hillary and anti-Biden contingents, but I doubt it's all-inclusive.

And, in fairness, plenty of anti-Hillary people voted for her in the general, if not as many as we would have preferred.

Sat May 11, 2019, 10:11 PM

...if I dare, that I am going for Bernie as a delegate.

But those in my state WISELY decided that as it is SUPPOSED to be, and up until recently this was the way it was done, there will be no putting down allowed as it is perfectly legal to go for whomever you want. NOBODY is allowed to put down another Democrat for their primary choices. Anyone who does that or insists it is going to be their way or the highway is WRONG, WRONG, WRONG. Anyone who does this is to blame for the whole disharmony that is within this party. PERIOD

We will vote without any prejudice for whomever is nominated. It is OK to disagree (kindly), speak about what you like about your primary choice, and to support their platforms. But in the end we all stand together for our nominated candidate.

BTW this is the way I did it last time, after she was nominated, voted for HRC as Bernie said we should do ~ and yes I was a Bernie delegate. I am *not* going to answer or respond to anyone who is rude, demeaning or downright mean about my choice. If anyone behaves like that they they should be told it is because of them that they are creating a disturbance in our party and to just STHU.

I have voted a straight Dem ticket for all my adult life. I have some serious issues with him, but I am glad Biden has jumped in, if nominated I will vote for him. His dying son wanted him, to run and by golly it is time for all of us to listen to that. You can count on me to cast my ballot for him if he wins the nomination.

And you seem to believe that's the only thing that Democrats want is someone that claims he can best Trump. Democrats need more than a Corporate opportunist and that seems to be all that he has to offer. Forget Medicare for all etc?

He will need more than his bluff, he will need other insentives if he want people to come out to the polls to vote for him. He will need to stop hanging on to Obama's coattails looking for his assists.

I personally believe Democrats will come out for any of these 20 people to get Trump out of office not just because Corporate media believes Biden is the man to do it.

Completely different things.

Sure, I'll vote for the Democratic candidate in the GE, but I support everyone discussing, supporting, and criticizing the candidates until then.

How about you? What do you say?

... why would that person even be posting on DU? We're all Democrats here, or at least we're all liberal/progressive thinkers who will certainly vote for the Democratic candidates.

I get your point, that some (few) Repukes will try to mess up the Democratic primary by voting down the candidate they fear the most. In this case it's probably Joe Biden. But that would be rat-fucking to a small degree, and it's not what we're discussing on this thread.

I never thought we could get a more lame and evil "leader" than shrub.

The concept that our Country could "elect" a serial groper was preposterous, I didn't even accept the possibility.

I back the candidate who earns the Democratic nomination via the primaries. Always. Why? Because that candidate got the most votes and earned the nomination. Winning general elections also requires getting the most votes, both in each state and in the Electoral College. I want a winner running in the general election, so I support our party's nominee every time.

Not everyone agrees with that, I guess.

my position is that the fixation on the mainstream solution is dangerous and is ultimately what lead to Trump's election in 2016.

I support Bernie Sanders because he is the candidate who most represents my views. I will accept and vote for Biden and not as a "lessor evil" I proudly supported Hillary in 2016 after Bernie endorsed her. I think that, though she was mainstream, she was still far and above many.

I hope we can proceed as I have often commented and posted approvals of your threads just don't expect me to tow the mainstream "Biden is necessary to defeat Trump." Especially right now.

And while it can never be tested and many questions remain but from where I sit Bernie would have been a better candidate against Trump in 2016. The electorate is looking for something beyond the normal standard Wall Street backed solution. So seriously that they went for Trump even though that was the opposite what they actually thought that they were getting.

Most people here are loyal enough Democrats that they certainly don't need to make any deals with you to convince them to vote for whomever the ultimate Democratic nominee is.

You promising to vote for Bernie or Elizabeth if one of them gets the nomination in exchange for their supporters promising to vote for Joe Biden if he gets the nod is one of the silliest things I've ever heard. LOL!
