Democratic Primaries

Biden is a decent man. As honest as most politicians. He's made some mistakes in the past and will trip over his tongue from time to time. He'd make a decent president. But, am I the only one who remembers his promise not to ever run for the presidency when he accepted the VP nomination ? This will bite him.

(5,523 posts)A big promise to break. He'll need some real twisted explanation. I'll vote for him if he gets the nod.

(102,230 posts)to fulfill their full current term and then immediately announced--like Gillibrand as but one example. Biden isn't in office, he's not leaving an office and he owes no one anything on that regard.

(67,782 posts)...their entire term have gone on to run for higher office? Gillibrand did, Warren did, and others, too (those are the only two names that come to mind)
At least Biden isn't in the midst of an elected term like some of the others. Aside from that, I don't recall Biden promising to not run for President.

(4,494 posts)I can recall Obama asking Biden to drop out in 2016 to give Clinton her shot, but that's all.
I think your memory is playing tricks on you, so if you have proof, please post it.

(5,523 posts)At times in his career, he succeeded in suppressing the urge. In 2008, Obamas advisers favored Biden for Vice-President in part because they assumed that Bidens agehe will be seventy-four on Inauguration Day, 2017would prevent the classic White House intrigue: a No. 2 angling and strategizing around his own desire to be No. 1. Biden gave them reason to believe that; during the 2008 campaign, he told Newsweek that he had said to Obama, Im sixty-five, and youre not going to have to worry about my positioning myself to be president. (Some in Bidens closest circle didnt believe that for a second. One of his longtime friends and aides told me last year, For six years, Ive been saying, if you dont believe that Joe Biden intends to run in 2016, you dont know Joe Biden.)
The bold quote is what the public knew and he must have said it more than once.

(32,687 posts)to run, despite his age, and now he's open to being president if the voters think it's OK. Personally, I agree with his previous view and would prefer someone younger--only because of how physically and mentally demanding the presidency is.
