AOC quote of the day. . . .

“I will be damned if the same politicians who refused to act then are going to try to come back today and say we need a middle of the road approach to save our lives."
- Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez

The truth can be hard on people. Especially those of us who recognize that our planet is dying.

But who are really the most deluded? Not the ones who would have us do something.

7. The Only Response To Climate Change

No matter the Democratic nominee, I'm an environmentalist first. A sober analysis tells us that we need to accomplish A WHOLE LOT in 12 years. We need to be on a steep slope below 400PPM of atmospheric carbon with the all important goal of 350 squarely in our sights. Bold action is the only way to make it happen and save 1 million species of flora and fauna from extinction.

Like i said, the US HAS worked to successfully reduce emissions and continues to do so. But the proposals of this green new deal make the cost of universal health care look like pocket change. And the other drawbacks also matter.

If we all live i the same building, then me stopping throwing rocks does nothing to keep in the AC when my brothers and sisters keep busting windows in the rest of the house.

75. China, whilst it still has massive systemic pollution issues, is spending trillions to transition

to the forefront of the global green technology movement, including, but absolutely not limited to their internal markets. It is far easier for them to do so, as they operate inside a state command and control quasi-dirigisme model. They do not have to navigate our incredibly compromised system of checks and balances (NOT just at governmental levels) that are interlocked with a dominant neo-corporatist framework inside which the fossil fuel industries constitute a huge power vector.

16. +1, here she is during Chris Hayes forum being quite vague herself:

"OCASIO-CORTEZ: No. And first all of we wave a magic wand and we passed
the Green New Deal resolution tomorrow, what happens? Nothing because it`s
a resolution. What our resolution that we introduced means is that it
passes the House and it passes the Senate, separately, it just means that
we make it a national priority and it says that the scope of the solution
must be on the scale of the problem. And so it outlines the ways we can
pursue that scope.

But in order for us to pursue this agenda, we don`t have to do it all at
once. But it outlines the ways and hows of doing it."

It's ridiculous for her to bash other Democrats if she is acknowledging here that what she is proposing is a "resolution." A "scope".

73. To ask why is AOC bashing Biden isn't "bashing AOC."

And neither is pointing out that the Green New Deal isn't very fleshed out. Hence the Senate Democrats saving it from an early death by voting "present" to McConnell's attempt to torpedo it, before it had any committee work on it.

I hope that AOC is appreciative of that.

Pointing that out isn't "bashing" AOC.

If you bash other Democrats they delete.

98. Biden's name was not mentioned. No particular issue was mentioned. BUT

this is a good warning for our side. I think people are tired of incrementalism. Wages have been basically stagnant for 40 years. That's what incrementalism gets you. Climate change is accelerating. That's what incrementalism gets you. Thousands die each year for lack of health care. That's what incrementalism gets you.
And yet, these millionaire politicians don't act as if they are aware of this. EVERY campaign season they talk about lifting everyone up, etc. But 40 years of stagnation. People are tired of that. . . and THAT is what this quote says. If everyone wants to make it their own, personal Rorschach test, not my problem. It says more about you than about the actual, black letter words in that quote.

100. So why don't you tell us who it was that "try to come back today "

if not Biden.

Why is it that you are the only one that denies that it's Biden?

Ocasio-Cortez takes a veiled shot at Joe Biden

So let's just acknowledge that, yes, she was the one that was bashing Biden with that quote, and the author of the OP didn't feel very comfortable including the full context.

I think people are tired of incrementalism.

Topic change.... you think that the Green New Deal doesn't talk about incremental implementation?

Have you even read it? It calls for a “10-year national mobilization.”

Overhauling transportation systems in the United States
- you think that's going to be done in one fell swoop?

I don't think you have read, have you?

And yet, these millionaire politicians don't act as if they are aware of this.

Going ever further off-topic...

But 40 years of stagnation. People are tired of that. . . and THAT is what this quote says.

No, she's talking about Biden, specifically. See the links above.

Makes sense. He's pulled ahead of Bernie in the polls.

66. There is also no room for stubborn inability to adapt one's strategies when

new data comes in that indicates alternate strategies might be more effective at actually doing what is best for future generations.

See also the pro-forced birth movement when you tell them that you can't legislate away abortions, and that destroying that 'establishment' group, Planned Parenthood will actually increase the number of abortions from unplanned pregnancies.

Digging in one's heels about specific tactics makes it more about the tactic than the actual issue one is trying to solve.

69. What "same people" are you referring to?

And what strategy are you referring to when you talk about "come up with alternate strategies that might be more effective. "

If you are talking about the "Green New Deal," what you are talking about is theoretical, so we have no idea if it would be effective.

Digging in one's heels about specific tactics makes it more about the tactic or a particular person than the actual issue one is trying to solve. As we've seen with the RW's stubborn refusal to accept that destroying that "establisment" Planned Parenthood will actually increase abortions from unplanned pregnancies is another illustration of this. They swear that eliminating PP will be the solution to women getting abortions, and say all other methods have failed.

Senate Democrats saved the Green New Deal by voting "present" when McConnell tried to torpedo it with a vote before it had been sent through committees to work out the details. I hope that AOC is appropriately appreciative of that.

And as for "hasn't happened yet" the following Democratic strategies for addressing climate change have been effective, so one can't say that none have "been come up with." The fact that they were implemented makes them more effective than any that are still theoretical.

The Obama administration joining the Paris Climate Accord, and created the White House Office of Energy and Climate Change Policy.

On June 25th, 2013, President Obama announced his Climate Action Plan (CAP) during a speech at Georgetown University. This comprehensive plan is the first of its kind and was developed by the Administration to strategically achieve three overarching goals: cut domestic carbon pollution, prepare the United States for climate change impacts, and lead international efforts to address global climate change.

The first goal, cutting U.S. carbon pollution, aligns with President Obama’s commitment to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 26-28 percent below 2005 levels by 2025. Strategies to meet this goal include reducing GHG emissions from the power sector and promoting energy efficiency and clean energy projects around the country. The Administration’s plan to cut emissions from light-duty vehicles through 2025, put into place pre-CAP during Obama’s first term, is a major component to reaching the 2025 emissions target.

https://www.eesi.org/papers/view/fact-sheet-timeline-progress-of-president-obama-climate-action-plan

The Clinton administration Climate Change Technology Initiative provided $4 billion in tax incentives over a five-year period. The tax credits applied to energy efficient homes and building equipment, implementation of solar energy systems, electric and hybrid vehicles, clean energy, and the power industry. The Climate Change Technology Initiative also provided funding for additional research and development on clean technology, especially in the building, electricity, industry, and transportation sectors.
