Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumWe need a candidate who has proven s/he can win in Trump County
Right now there are Montana Gov. Bullock and Minnesota Senator Klobuchar.
After reading a post here - cannot find it now - I stayed late last night to watch Rachel's rerun for the Bullock interview. He won his re-election at the same time that Montana went for Trump.
Similarly, Klobuchar won many of the precincts that Trump won in 2016.

And no, don't discard this because many still think of Minnesota in terms of Humphrey, Mondale and Wellstone. Minnesota has been getting purple (blaming the Vikings and Prince? ). Hillary barely carried it in 2016 and the only House seats that were flipped from D to R in 2018 are in Minnesota.
Will all due respect to Harris and Warren, Inslee and Hickenlooper they won in strong Democratic states.
OK, start firing..

(10,008 posts)While getting some Trump converts is great...and would overwhelmingly happen if many Trump voters compared actual policies, the fact is most Trump, or "Trump Country", voters just love the idea of Trump. They are beyond reach.

(47,462 posts)F**king A - is a Trump country.
But it is also political areas - state, city, county, district, precinct - where he won. Big.

(2,439 posts)It would help if they campaigned in these areas. I havent seen any candidates target northern and central WI like Trump has and did in 2016. Those areas cost us dearly in 2016.

question everything
(47,462 posts)It was Bill Clinton who declared that politics is the art of compromise.
In such a divided country like ours - no Lyndon Johnson leaning on senators, "holding their peckers in his pocket" - we need to be able to compromise.
No, what we may have now is a Trump, tea party in reverse. My way or the highway. Free healthcare, free college, free income and perhaps more freebies with no explanation on how to pay for them. I think it was Reagan's treasurer who said that voters did not care about the deficit. I would think that Millennials would care more about the "kicking the can." We have a huge deficit and we cannot pile more and more.

(10,870 posts)That means a whole lot of Montanans that voted for Trump for President also voted for the Democrat Bullock for Governor.
Thats pretty darn impressive for Bullock.

(17,615 posts).... In fact eastern Wash is close to Idaho and we have THAT influence over there and we've had a PITA called Dino Rossi who has gone after many Dem positions including Governor...and hes come pretty damned close to winning a cpl times. Inslee had to work for his win.

Still, Hillary won 52 - 37 (Gary Johnson 5, others 3).
In Minnesota it was 46.5 - 45

(43,261 posts)I would hardly call it 'Trump country' overall. The closeness of 2016 was due to a multitude of factors, hopefully all unlikely to be repeated.
