(12,008 posts)The problem I have with that kind of thinking is illustrated by the fact that there is no candidate (or organization) who I agree with 100%. I would not want my support for any person or group to be seen as "complicit" with every position or action taken by that person or group. But the only alternative is to support no one and nothing.

While that combination is important to me, a major factor in my support form him in the primaries is because I believe he has the best chance of winning the General Election at this time.
The smartest candidate I believe the Democrats have running is Elizabeth Warren. She has specifics, how to pay for them, and economically she is on the top of her game. I just don't think she stands a very good chance in the general election.
My top three candidates that I support, and have donated to are Joe Biden, Kamala Harris, and Elizabeth Warren.
That could change as time moves on, and we will see what happens in the debates, but I think Biden can get votes from so-called independents that the other candidates would have trouble getting.

People don't know her (yet) like they know him, but she has a very compelling life story. So does Kamala Harris, even if she didn't come from a fly-over state.
Also, most people don't know this about my Governor, Jay Inslee, but he was voted into elected office more than once from the red part of my state. When he took office as Governor, we still had a divided legislature (2012). He was re-elected in 2016; and in 2018, for the first time in decades, we finally went all blue. Inslee should get some credit for that. The change took place under his leadership.

(92,596 posts)and when she was part of President Obama's Consumer Bureau, and of course since she has been Senator of Massachusetts. But you are right, people don't really know her like Biden, and I think some of that is due to media coverage, where the focus has been on primarily on Biden and Sanders, but I think a lot of it is due to our system, where you need a lot of money to even be considered as a viable candidate, which is really sad.
I sure didn't know Jay Inslee was able to get a significant amount of cross-over votes from the red parts of Washington. I do know that Inslee one of the best in regard to the environment. Again, I think it is because of money.
I think most of the candidates will meet the minimum requirements to be in the initial debates. They need at least 1% in the polls or a minimum amount of donations, and most should meet the 1% rule, at least that is the way I think it is.
The big issue for the viability of a candidate is money.
I agree with your assessment, for whatever reason, people don't really know a lot of these candidates. Hopefully, the debates will changes that, and more money will pour into their campaigns. They need the nationwide exposure.

You must have honest reasons you could present to oppose Biden, and if you don't what the hell are you doing? Smearing Paul Wellstone, who was friendly with Republicans, like Trent Lott (!), virtually every day of his working life? Because that is how it's done.
Btw, since you're interested in Biden and cancer, how about the Biden Cancer Initiative and the Cancer Moonshot efforts to gather forces and focus their efforts "to end cancer as we know it" that VP Biden committed himself to after his elder son died? Cancer Moonshot was formed to develop vaccine-based immunotherapies for cancer, and research is on. Today, during National Police Week and Mental Health Awareness Month, U.S. Representatives Fred Upton (R-MI06), Debbie Dingell (D-MI12), Susan W. This bill provides grants to encourage states to adopt laws, similar to Indianas 2005 Jake Laird Law, that enable local law enforcement, with probable cause, to temporarily remove and retain firearms from individuals who are determined to be an imminent danger to themselves or others.

Upton has changed his views to the hard right on climate change in an effort to win the committee chairmanship.
Fred Uptons Climate Changeup
https://www.motherjones.com/politics/2011/01/fred-upton-global-warming/
Late last week, Upton coauthored a Wall Street Journal op-ed with Tim Phillips, the president of Americans for Prosperity, a conservative group that has opposed action on climate change. In it, the pair wrote that a new EPA regulation to curb greenhouse gas emissions, which took effect on Sunday, presumes that carbon is a problem in need of regulation. We are not convinced. They also decried the carbon rules as an unconstitutional power grab that will kill millions of jobs.
Phillips position is not surprising. Denying climate change is an institutional priority for AFP, which has received millions from fossil fuel interests, including $5 million from the philanthropic arm of the oil and gas giant Koch Industries. AFP has even coordinated a climate change-denying Hot Air Tour, which made a stop in Cancun last month during the UN climate summit there.
snip
Upton claimed there is no real science to verify that cutting emissions would stave off climate change.
In the months since Republicans claimed the House, Uptons taken a much harsher stance against regulating emissions. He faced stiff competition from more conservative members for the energy and commerce committee for the chairmanship, and he had to overcome complaints that he was too moderate for the post. (Then theres the money factor: Koch was among Uptons top contributors this election cycle, along with several other energy companies.)
Joe Bidens Paid Speech Buoyed the G.O.P. in Midwest Battleground
The former vice president's address in October helped Fred Upton, a vulnerable Republican, win re-election in Michigan.

But Mr. Bidens appearance in Michigan plainly set his lucrative personal activities at odds with what some Democrats saw as his duty to the party, linking him with a civic group seen as tilting to the right and undermining Democrats effort to defeat Mr. Upton, a powerful lawmaker who in 2017 helped craft a bill to repeal the Affordable Care Act.
Finally, this Biden stance is also very problematic for me, very:

A business-backed Republican group, Defending Main Street, ran digital ads on Facebook showing a grinning Mr. Biden and the crucial quote Fred Upton is one of the finest guys Ive ever worked with above a mock version of the former vice presidents signature.
Mr. Lester, the local Democratic chairman, said he strove to contain the damage. In an email to Mr. Bidens staff, Mr. Lester implored the former vice president to back Mr. Longjohn: Surely VP Biden did not intend to endorse Mr. Upton and slight the local Democratic candidate here, he wrote.
Mr. Longjohn, the former national health officer of the YMCA, said in an interview that he had been disappointed to see Mr. Biden clap Mr. Upton on the back in an establishment political way. He said his campaign had reached out to Mr. Bidens staff through an intermediary, seeking to discuss his involvement in the race.
There was nothing but silence, Mr. Longjohn said. We had just requested a phone call and there was no response.

Maybe Longjohn lost all on his own. Feel free to Google his name and see what predicament he was in with a personal claim he made about himself.
In the meantime, it's just absolutely bizarre and frankly sickening that you think people meeting to fund/discuss cancer research are to be condemned. It's sickening, actually. I'm very encouraged about Biden's cancer initiative. Let anyone and everyone who wants to contribute to that endeavor join in. Fuck cancer.

THAT was the point of the appearance, to support a foundation that contributes to cancer research. Despite their protestations, this wasn't a campaign event and it was not an endorsement of Upton.

(5,447 posts)is constructive and doesn't mean that you support them in all things-- that is too simplistic and an example of tribal thinking. Basically, there is nothing wrong in praising an opponent for the good they have done. If a murderer goes out and saves people's lives in an earthquake, they certainly should be praised for the good they have done, but that doesn't excuse their wrongs. So why praise at all? To show that good individual acts are recognized as such and to encourage other good acts from such folks.

(29,322 posts)Liberty Union people found it difficult to support themselves while engaging in full-time political work, Michael Parenti, one of those people, wrote in the Massachusetts Review in the summer of 1975. Some held jobs that allowed free time for campaign activities, while others lived off unemployment insurance.
Sanders, according to an article in 1974 in the Bennington Banner, was one of them. He was on unemployment for a few months in 1971. In subsequent Liberty Union campaigns he advocated for the doing away with all time limitations for unemployment benefits.
His work was to be a politician, Guma said. He put everything into what he was doing.
I dont know what he did for money, Troville said. Everything was always campaigning. Everything was always organizing. Everything was always writing.
He was totally involved in his attempts at running for office, Marvin Fishman, who knew him at the time, told me on the phone.
