Democratic candidate Julián Castro touts integrity, underdog status during speech at 2019 Elevate Summit
MURFREESBORO - Democratic presidential candidate Julián Castro had a well-paying job at a prominent San Antonio law firm when he was a 27-year-old serving on the city council. But when his firms client sought approval on a land deal that he saw as environmentally problematic for constituents and water quality, he said he left the firm and his $100,000 salary and voted against the deal.
It was the right choice, Castro said, even when it challenged his livelihood and career and caused him to fall behind on student loan payments. He shared the story Sunday at the Tennessee Democratic Party's 2019 Elevate Summit as an illustration of prioritizing integrity as he pursues the nation's highest office.
I want to restore integrity and decency to the Oval Office," Castro said, speaking at Middle Tennessee State University. "There is nobody who gets tested more in a position of public trust than the president of the United States.
Castro, former head of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development under President Barack Obama, visited Tennessee as part of his pledge to visit each state during the primary season. He is among 23 Democratic candidates seeking their party's nomination, and he acknowledged that he is not considered the front runner. But, his current status does not concern him at this point in the race, he said.
