change. Nor did we veer left as the media and some Democrats insisted. The midterms showed a different reality. 2016 was an aberration with a perfect storm of trouble that hit us. Hillary took criticism from the left and the right when that happens, we lose. Comey tipped the scale with both of his unprofessional statements, we had gerrymandering and voter suppression and of course the Russians. This was an aberration and we still need the same state we always did to win. Biden can win those states. In 2018, the house flipped because of moderate Democrats. Thus there is no leftward movement in this party or this country. We are a center left country and a big tent party.
"PHILADELPHIAIf the new rules of politics post-2016 were to hold up, the official launch rally Joe Biden held here on Saturday would mean that he is in trouble: The crowd wasnt huge, was largely white and older, and, for the most part, only really got into it when he mentioned Barack Obama or Donald Trump.
Yet Bidens high-and-getting-higher poll numbers, the early fund-raising success that has surprised even his own aides, and the enthusiastic responses I heard from supporters who came out on a hot afternoon to see him dont show a candidate in much trouble at all. Bidens campaign is a bet: that in the four years since Trump launched his campaign, the country hasnt changed, the Democratic Party hasnt changed, and politics hasnt changed."

Do you believe elections have been changed forever because of 2016?

(16,646 posts)The large number of women entering politics will have a long lasting affect. The inclusion of women of various ethnic backgrounds will also cause change. And if appears minority women are showing up at the voting booth too, that will also cause a shift in governing.

(68,788 posts)Women who took the house. Sex will not determine ideology anymore than it does for men. If you are looking for a progressive revolution based on women winning elections... it is not happening in my opinion.

(12,344 posts)Trump will have his emulators who will learn from his mistakes. The radical right will become a fifth column. Global warming and AI will increasingly rule our reality. The American Empire will grow weaker and soon crumble.
People may vote for normalcy, but that doesn't mean they'll get it.

The voting public of our country seems to suffer from severe ADD. It'll play a big part while Cheetolini is in office, a part for a few subsequent elections, and further down the road will be an occasional "example" brought up in political debate between voters.

(43 posts)"White and older." Every damn time.
But Biden is the most popular candidate among black Americans and 18-29 year-olds too, so he looks pretty solid!

(68,788 posts)'Why any of our fine candidates can win'. I will scream. No they can't. This is a tough election and our path is the same as Trump's through MI,WI and PA. Biden can win those states...the others won't.

(3,256 posts)Not a single blue state from 2016 is in danger of being lost by Democrats.
However, a lot of red states are in danger of being lost by republicans.
MI, WI, PA for sure.
AZ, OH, NC possibly.
FL, TX long shot.
