Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumHow Joe Biden has changed the race. Now Bernie Sanders is holding fundraisers.
The Vermont senator has decided to hold in-person fundraising events where donors of all means will be invited and the media will be allowed. He has also hired a fundraiser to oversee the effort, a position he did not have in his 2016 bid.
The moves, described by campaign sources to POLITICO, amount to an acknowledgment by Sanders that his online-only approach to raising money was leaving significant amounts of money on the table. That cash could be decisive in a primary with nearly two dozen candidates competing fiercely for money: Sanders top rival, Democratic front-runner Joe Biden, is raking in huge sums from major Democratic donors in the early weeks of the race with a slew of fundraisers.
The altered strategy is a sign that Sanders is running a different kind of campaign in 2020, shedding some of his resistance to a side of politics hes instinctively repelled by.

(31,261 posts)I think that Senator Warren and Mayor Pete have cut deeply into his online cash stream, so he has to do face time with the true believers. I believe that that will eventually expose him and cause some of those people to bolt to Senator Warren.

Maybe Bernie Sanders will do something similar.
We dont know the details yet, but I dont think Bernie Sanders is going to do $2,800-per-ticket events like Joe Biden does.

(31,261 posts)When she go to a fundraiser in a city, anyone who has been a documented contributor can rsvp. This brings in the regular people and the supporters that have big wallets.
I am sure that Senator Sanders has very well off backers. If he does things like Senator Warren, it's all positive.

(31,261 posts)on a video, usually pre-recorded. Honestly I believe that face time between the candidate and all of that candidate's supporters is a good thing. If Senator Sanders does this right, he can draw critical contrasts to former Vice President Biden, but Senator Sanders' team seem to be panicking, I am not sure that they have a sound plan for the fundraisers.

(31,261 posts)Panic is when you try an old method, see it is not working then wildly thrash about for new ideas.
I am sure that there is abundant incompetence in Senator Sanders' campaign, we have seen some (inability to answer simple questions at important forums and appearances, seemingly determination not to aggressively reach out to Black democrats before holding events in cities where Blacks are a majority, ect), but with things like fundraising, that is pure sweaty panic straight-up.

(4,831 posts)From the article;
"Still, this is far from a full embrace of big money by the candidate who loved to boast that his average donation in 2016 was $27. His campaign has dubbed the events he plans to hold grassroots fundraisers. Theyre expected to have a relatively low ticket price, but larger donors will be able to attend and could potentially get face time with the candidate. '
