Afghanistan Vet Mayor Pete Buttigieg Says Trump Faked a Disability to Get Out of Vietnam

Democratic hopeful said the president used his ‘privileged status’ to avoid the draft and send someone else to war in his place.

“I don’t have a problem standing up to somebody who was working on season seven of Celebrity Apprentice when I was packing my bags for Afghanistan,” he said.

Costa then asked Buttigieg, the mayor of South Bend, Indiana, if Trump should have served.

“I have a pretty dim view of his decision to use his privileged status to fake a disability in order to avoid serving in Vietnam,” Buttigieg replied. When Costa asked if Buttigieg believed that Trump “faked” the bone spurs in his heels to avoid the draft, the mayor rhetorically asked if “you believe he has a disability?”

As the audience chucked, Buttigieg protested that the dig was not meant as a joke.

“Needless to say, the way that [Trump] has treated and mocked disabled people is just one more example of the many affronts to basic decency that this president has inflicted on this country,” Buttigieg said, before refocusing on Trump’s Vietnam-era medical exemption.

“If he were a conscientious objector, I’d admire that,” Buttigieg said. “But this is somebody who, I think it’s fairly obvious to most of us, took advantage of the fact that he was the child of a multi-millionaire in order to pretend to be disabled so that somebody could go to war in his place.”

NRA republican fake tuFFy-boy, Teddy Nugent. They both earned their status as republican chickenhawks the old fashioned republican way: lying.

I’d make an incredible army man. I’d be a colonel before you knew what hit you, and I’d have the baddest bunch of motherf****n’ killers you’d ever seen in my platoon. But I just wasn’t into it. I was too busy doin’ my own thing, you know.”

You don't get promoted past private if you're an egocentric blowhard. Serving is an honor and a privilege, the person that does it well, has to have character. Go do your own thing, and quit showing it to nuns.

still, I cannot blame anyone for not wanting to die for nothing in Vietnam. I supported Bill Clinton even when those around me were calling him a draft dodger, feeling that military experience is not a necessary prerequisite for the presidency.

And as for the people who went to war in his place, I blame LBJ and Nixon for that.

avoided the draft and someone like trump who essentially made fun of those who served by saying that avoiding STDs was his Vietnam.

Most of those who avoided the draft for Vietnam seriously opposed the war. Trump only opposed being inconvenienced.

that was a very flippant and hurtful comment he made, no doubt about it.

But being drafted was not merely "inconvenient". It meant going off to very probably die in a war that the US had no damned business being in, and no effective plan to win decisively. I cannot fault anyone for wanting to preserve their life, no matter how selfish it looked at the time or today.

but many others used college as a way to get out of Vietnam. And grade inflation kept them there. I wasn't quite draft age, but very nearly so. I went into higher education with this phenomenon fully in place.

Trump has many, many more faults than this, we should focus on them.

My friends and relatives were going to Vietnam (as a female, I was not eligible for the draft). My husband at the time was in the National Guard, which was only a barely honorable way to avoid the draft. I know there is still a lot of resentment from those who had to go against those who found a way out.

I totally agree, though. Trump has plenty of other stuff to pick on but this once again shows what a liar and cheat he is. I don't think any candidate should fail to be honest about his/her feelings if asked.

I hated the Vietnam War and still put a lot of blame on LBJ. The good things he did are always overshadowed by it.
