Amy Klobuchar recalled John McCain's searing response to Trump's inauguration. Meghan McCain wasn't

Amy Klobuchar recalled John McCain’s searing response to Trump’s inauguration. Meghan McCain wasn’t having it.

In 2008, Sen. John McCain was the Republican presidential nominee. But for 2020 contenders, his name is apparently off limits, at least as far as his family is concerned. One such candidate, Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.), was publicly scolded by the late Arizona Republican’s daughter on Monday after she shared an anecdote about how McCain had reportedly rattled off the names of dictators during President Trump’s inauguration.

“On behalf of the entire McCain family — @amyklobuchar please be respectful to all of us and leave my father’s legacy and memory out of presidential politics,” tweeted Meghan McCain, one of the late senator’s seven children and a co-host of ABC’s “The View.”

Speaking before an audience of roughly 200 people during a Saturday campaign stop in Des Moines, Klobuchar described Trump’s inauguration as “dark” and recalled how she sat on the stage between John McCain and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) that day while Trump delivered a speech about rampant crime, rusted-out factories and “American carnage.” The fiery populist rhetoric apparently reminded McCain of various authoritarian figures from throughout history. “John McCain kept reciting to me names of dictators during that speech because he knew more than any of us what we were facing as a nation. He understood it,” Klobuchar said on Saturday, according to NBC News. “He knew because he knew this man more than any of us did.”

(snip)

Klobuchar, who has described McCain as a mentor and visited him at his ranch in Arizona while he was fighting cancer, has frequently spoken out against such attacks. A spokesman told The Washington Post that she has great respect for McCain’s family but did not indicate whether that meant Klobuchar would avoid using the anecdote in future.

“Senator Klobuchar had a longtime friendship with Senator McCain, she has defended him against President Trump’s attacks in the past, and she has deep respect for his family,” said Tim Hogan, the campaign’s communications director. “While she was simply sharing a memory, she continues to believe that the best stories about Senator McCain are not about the views he had about President Trump: They are about McCain’s own valor and heroism.”

"searing." I'm no fan of hers, but I think she has the right to make a request like this, and it appears she understood that Klobuchar did not intend any disrespect.

He has been part of important events of this country for many years. He ran for President, Trump belittled him, still does, he killed the "repeal of the ACA."

Phoned, Texted, Emailed her--sent a GOT raven. Instead, she made it a big public spectacle. (Undoubtedly to reassure her very RW husbands "minders" that she wasn't going too far off the Trump reservation.

And McCain lived his life as a public person. NOTHING Klobuchar said was disrespectful and NOTHING she said was out of bounds for a long time friend of the very public, very outspoken, long term Senator or AZ.

I've defended Meghan and her family throughout. But, this rings exploitative to me (and not on the part of Klobuchar)

I agree with George Conway on this:

She can censor and silence any and all discussion of a well-known Senator?

I don't think so. There was nothing negative about that comment. Nothing unseemly, Meghan just didn't like a Democrat making it.

Senator McCain was a pubic official at a public event paid for with public money and spoke the words in public knowing they were being heard. We had, and have, every earthly right to know what those words were.
