Their favorite go-to argument at the time, you may recall, was the same one the Apartheid regime always put out: "Look at the rest of Africa."

The fact that Mandela was not advocating for a Black-dominated dictatorship (much less a CIA or French-installed one, like many of Africa's dictators were at the time) was always conveniently left out.

a bill imposing crippling economic sanctions on South Africa, which Nelson Mandela approved. When Reagan vetoed it on a fake excuse, congress very solidly overrode the presidential veto, something virtually unheard of at that time.

Reagan's election signaled the end of the long New Deal era and beginning of the conservative era which has dragged the Republican Party and nation down dreadfully, but their Republicans in congress hadn't yet been corrupted or purged and replaced with corrupt, extreme RWers who were put in office to serve their donor classes.
