I hope it is not Biden

I had lunch with a friend of mine a few weeks ago and we both hope the nominee is not Biden. Sadly, I don't think he is up to the task. First, he is old. Old is not what America needs now. Next, he is a gaffe machine and has tons of baggage. Picture Anita Hill over and over. Trump will label him "sleepy Joe" or some crap and there you go. Usually the job of President ages someone, but not Trump. That's because he does not do the job. He screws off, golfs, tweets, and eats fried chicken. He will look the same on the debate stage. Of course he will skate away from all his crimes and incompetence. So when it is two old guys on a debate stage, Trump wins. We need a young man or woman that can say "I'm young, it's time for a change, vote grandpa out" - that might work. Otherwise buckle up for 4 more years of Trump. And even more when he refuses to leave. Getting him out of the White House will be like unclogging a stubborn toilet.

If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for:

in your assessment of Biden as a candidate, though I'm sure the opposition will use many of the same arguments. As for Trump's stupid labels, he will do that to anyone he perceives as a threat. The only people who take that seriously are his hardcore base.

Perhaps you should focus on your candidate and let republicans attack our current front runner.

Right now he seems still mentally sharp. But....I remember Reagan, who before he left was almost certainly in early Alzheimer’s. Orange Creep is younger and seemingly in some kind of decline. it can happen quickly. And his baggage is indeed an issue, like that odious crime bill in addition to the Anita Hill thing.

Again I will fully support him if he’s it. But I would prefer Kamala Harris or Elizabeth Warren or Beto O’Rourke.....though with the evil dangerous Clown in there now any port in this historic storm.

There was a video of a recent speech by Biden to a small group. It was underwhelming. Too much of "I'm not going to bore you with blah blah blah". He just looked tired and like if he had tried to get down into the details he would have stumbled big time. I think it was on Kimmel's show.

Harris or Warren. They appear to have the skill and energy and a machine to take them to the finish line. The folks who don't usually vote (what, 50% of registered voters is it?). They are the ones for whom we need a candidate who will excite.

Supposedly she is here to help Joni Ernst; others think she is there to prepare for a 2024 run.

She may be there to prepare to replace either Trump or Pence on the 2020 ticket.

Bless your heart.

There's a well-known saying: "Money can't buy you love." But there is one a lot more true: "Money can't buy experience."

We need a Mayor Pete (fantastic man) in either the VP position or as an incredible Secretary of State, so that he could learn from Joe, or Elizabeth Warren. Maybe Kamala Harris, but some Washington experience might benefit her, too.

And, I am counting the days until we can cast a presidential vote for AOC!

But I would not vote for her now, even if I could.

Experience gives you an eagle's eye view of situations and keeps you from knee-jerk, ill-considered responses.

Experience is what we need now, with youth waiting in the wings. We have enough great candidates to hold the presidency for decades, if we will just get smart and play the long game the way the Repubs do.

75. I don't know how many times I have said this on DU,
Sat Jun 1, 2019, 08:35 PM
Jun 2019

but I'm going to keep repeating it. And others in this thread have said pretty much the same thing.

This country is in crisis, a crisis I don't think we have seen since the Civil War. And if you don't think it's that bad, you are not paying attention.

If there was ever a time for experience, it is now.

Yes, Barack Obama took office as a young man, without the experience that Joe Biden now has. And yes, President Obama did an incredible job. President Obama inherited Bush's mess, but the next president will be walking into a minefield.

Trump has disgraced us at every turn. He has made our country a laughing stock. He is tearing up our justice system, and he is fanning the flames of hatred as fast as he possibly can. He is destroying everything he touches.

There are a number of Democratic candidates who are incredible in so many ways, and I would love to see any number of them as vice president, and then in the future as president.

But right now, this country needs the respect that Joe Biden will bring to the office, the knowledge he will bring to the office, the goodwill he already carries with him, to deal with countries and leaders all around the world.

It isn't just going to take the experience of our president, but the experience of leaders around the world to help us heal this country. We are going to need their help, and I think they would all reach out their hand to Joe Biden.

102. Opinion: Which progressive could topple Biden?
Tue Jun 4, 2019, 06:40 PM
Jun 2019

The latest Morning Consult poll shows former vice president Joe Biden retains his huge lead over Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) — 38 percent to 19 percent overall, 40 percent to 18 percent in early primary states. Democratic voters like Biden (76 percent approval) and trust him. Unless he stumbles in the debates or makes some other horrendous error — and maybe not even then — he might not break a sweat in tallying up wins in the early primary states. That’s why Sanders is harshly attacking Biden, and why the most progressive activists are getting nervous.

If Biden is to be beaten, there is a strong case to be made that it won’t be by Sanders, whose decision simply to rerun his 2016 campaign has cost him momentum and enthusiasm. If Democrats are going to go with an older white guy, they might as well pick someone whom Trump won’t bludgeon as a socialist.

Chances are that if progressives are going to take down Biden, they will have to rally behind one of three contenders — Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), Sen. Kamala D. Harris (D-Calif.) or South Bend, Ind. Mayor Pete Buttigieg.

Warren has carved out a distinct third-place spot in polling and has adeptly distinguished herself as the candidate “with a plan for that” — “that” meaning just about every challenge facing the United States. The debates will test her ability to defend herself without sounding defensive and alleviate concerns that she won’t be able to stand up to Trump’s bullying.
