Bernie Sanders Delivered the Most Profound Speech Since We Lost MLK

(snip)

It is not hyperbole to suggest that Senator Bernie Sanders's June 12, 2019 Democratic Socialism Speech was as profound as any delivered by either of the two men who Sanders frequently quoted: President Franklin D. Roosevelt and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. It was a speech in which the Vermont senator revealed that his campaign, and accompanying "political revolution", offer a unique vehicle for societal transformation—from what President Jimmy Carter described as "an oligarchy with unlimited political bribery" to the realization of the promise offered by President Abraham Lincoln in his Gettysburg Address: "government of the people, by the people and for the people."

Sanders brilliantly coupled a condemnation of the tyranny of capitalist oligarchy with FDR's recognition that democracy and freedom are unattainable in the absence of economic security. That message was so powerful that all three major corporate-owned cable networks—Fox "News", CNN and MSNBC—abruptly terminated their live coverage mid-speech. They did so before Sanders outlined what he described as a "21st Century Economic Bill of Rights".

Bernie noted that income and wealth inequality have soared to levels not seen since the onset of the Great Depression. "Three families," he said, “control more wealth than the bottom half of our country, some 160 million people."

That was actually an understatement. As of 2017, America's three richest "individuals"—Bill Gates, Jeff Bezos and Warren Buffet—own as much wealth as the bottom 160 million, according to a report released by Institute for Policy Studies. "If left unchecked," Josh Hardy, the study's co-author observed, "wealth will continue to accumulate into fewer and fewer hands."

Goddess. I dayum near cried hearing his words.

Edmund Pettus Bridge

Selma, Alabama

2:17 P.M. CST

AUDIENCE MEMBER: We love you, President Obama!

THE PRESIDENT: Well, you know I love you back. (Applause.)

It is a rare honor in this life to follow one of your heroes. And John Lewis is one of my heroes.

Now, I have to imagine that when a younger John Lewis woke up that morning 50 years ago and made his way to Brown Chapel, heroics were not on his mind. A day like this was not on his mind. Young folks with bedrolls and backpacks were milling about. Veterans of the movement trained newcomers in the tactics of non-violence; the right way to protect yourself when attacked. A doctor described what tear gas does to the body, while marchers scribbled down instructions for contacting their loved ones. The air was thick with doubt, anticipation and fear. And they comforted themselves with the final verse of the final hymn they sung:

“No matter what may be the test, God will take care of you;

Lean, weary one, upon His breast, God will take care of you.”

And then, his knapsack stocked with an apple, a toothbrush, and a book on government -- all you need for a night behind bars -- John Lewis led them out of the church on a mission to change America.

snip

Selma is such a place. In one afternoon 50 years ago, so much of our turbulent history -- the stain of slavery and anguish of civil war; the yoke of segregation and tyranny of Jim Crow; the death of four little girls in Birmingham; and the dream of a Baptist preacher -- all that history met on this bridge.

It was not a clash of armies, but a clash of wills; a contest to determine the true meaning of America. And because of men and women like John Lewis, Joseph Lowery, Hosea Williams, Amelia Boynton, Diane Nash, Ralph Abernathy, C.T. Vivian, Andrew Young, Fred Shuttlesworth, Dr. Martin Luther King,Jr., and so many others, the idea of a just America and a fair America, an inclusive America, and a generous America -- that idea ultimately triumphed.

As a major party candidate, Bernie's Economic Bill of Rights policy proposals are unmatched in modern American History in their scope and depth in regards to fundamental, structural and social change.

My own personal opinion is that if Bernie's EBR were to pass here in the U.S. all manner of social stress would most definitely be reduced to a lesser or greater extent and we; might actually improve our ranking as a nation on the world wide happiness scale and give Scandinavia, Finland along with other such nations stronger competition.

Bernie Sanders Delivered the Most Profound Speech Since We Lost MLK

That was 50+ years ago. Obviously the author never listened to any of the 12 speeches high-lighted at my link, such as these:

• March 7, 2015 — Civil rights march anniversary speech at the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Ala.

• Jan. 5, 2016 — Anniversary speech regarding Newtown, Conn., school shooting. Obama, moved to tears, said, “Every time I think about those kids, it gets me mad,” and called for action to control gun violence.

• June 26, 2015 — Mass shooting eulogy in Charleston, S.C. The president sang “Amazing Grace” to highlight his theme in the aftermath of a white supremacist’s shooting spree inside a black church.

• Jan. 20, 2013 — Second inaugural address. Obama talked about locations marking milestones in the fight for rights for women, black and LGBT people. “Lincoln’s is the only other second inaugural address that was better than the first,” Rowland said.

however, like so many other rabidly anti-Hillary posters that posted at DU during the 2016 primary, they declined to agree to the new "don't bash Hillary and other Democrats" Terms of Service after the conclusion of the primary.

Guess they realized they'd no longer be able to post shit like:

"Honestly, Bill and Hill make the Bushes look like slackers."
https://upload.democraticunderground.com/?com=view_post&forum=1251&pid=1771028

"I used to think the Bushes were grifters. Bill and Hill took it to a new level."
https://upload.democraticunderground.com/?com=view_post&forum=1251&pid=1774318

"It is not accurate to say she plays the game according to the rules. Unless the rules mean that it's okay to break the law."
https://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=view_post&forum=1251&pid=1859597

There's lots and lots more like that. Google site search is a really useful tool, and people have to own their histories.

Strange that they'd want to come back to a website that so curtailed their freedom to bash Democrats during 2016.

It's a dialogue about public issues of substance, and the inability or unwillingness across our political leaders to discuss the excesses of capitalism hurts everyone.

Kudos to Sanders for having the political courage to raise the issue of income inequality prominently and persistently. He deserves more credit for doing this with audiences across the nation at a time when the leading candidates, save Warren, have far less to say about these issues.

significance of Sander's speech, but the responses here sure do signify a lot.

I'm surprised folks don't think these statements and underlying points of view expressed in a speech by a Presidential candidate who actually came pretty close to being nominated the last go round aren't somewhat significant:

"Money becomes evil not when it is used to buy goods but when it is used to buy power…Economic inequalities become evil when they are translated into political inequalities." Political inequality ... leads to more dangerous economic inequalities.

Extreme inequality is dangerous ... it paves the way for demagogues to exploit widespread anger and despair, as occurred in the 1930s. "Then, as now, deeply-rooted and seemingly intractable economic and social disparities led to the rise of right-wing nationalist forces all over the world."

"In Europe, the anger and despair was ultimately harnessed by authoritarian demagogues who fused corporatism, nationalism, racism and xenophobia into a political movement that amassed totalitarian power, destroyed, and ultimately murdering millions of people ..."

DU is atypical of Democrats nationally when it comes to Sanders. Most of the anti-Sanders contingent won't bother to listen but will type pre-formed opinions repeatedly.

Sanders' outspokenness on income inequality and oligarchy is an important contribution to the politics of our time, and he still has a lot of support in this campaign, third at worst, but probably second in the polls. So his statements will continue to influence the direction of the party.

I was in the back of the crowd for his 1965 "How Long? Not Long" speech in Alabama. I also heard Bernie Sanders' speech. There is no possible comparison between the two. MKL electrified his audience. His speech changed the direction of my life, from being an aspiring engineer to becoming a writer who helped people do things in several areas. MLK's speech inspired hope in his audience, for things that still have not been realized.

Bernie's speech is not what that writer said it was. Not even close. it was a campaign speech by a candidate who is slipping in the polls. It was a speech by a candidate for President, running for the second time for the Democratic nomination. It wasn't a bad speech. It was a pretty good speech, actually. But it was not the speech that writer characterized it as being. Nope.

41. And to think I turned it off when I heard him assert, again, that....
Sat Jun 15, 2019, 01:12 PM
Jun 2019

...the solution to every problem is economic. Sexism, homophobia, racism, the death of the planet itself -- never mind the State withering away, these evils shall cease to exist with an entirely economic remedy. It's so clear; why even address them by name?

Then I, having heard this before from BS, quite independently turned off the tv and walked off in my benighted state, not knowing the soaring rhetoric I was about to miss. FDR, MLK, and BS, oh my.

PS: I happen to agree with him that oligarchy is evil, and that unregulated capitalism destroys democracy. Really I do. But other things also destroy democracy, and must be named for what they are.

Sun Jun 16, 2019, 08:39 AM

stump speech, drawn out to mind-numbing length, delivered in an even more tired rant than usual -- all in an attempt to link Sanders to MLK and in particular FDR. Only people who are already Sanders true believers are likely to have bought those comparisons, or to have considered it a profound speech.

I very much doubt it seemed convincing to anyone else.

It was a rhetorical Hail Mary pass, but outside the circle of true believers, it failed.
