Chuck Todd Spends Three Minutes Asking Mayor Pete if African-Americans May Be Too Homophobic to Vote For Him

By Tommy Christopher June 16th, 2019, 1:06 pm

-snip-

On Sunday morning’s edition of NBC News’ Meet the Press, Todd read Buttigieg a quote from Rev. Rodric Reid that posed Mayor Pete’s sexuality as a sticking point with black voters.

Todd said that while many Democrats “are excited” about Buttigieg’s campaign, “you hear the whisper, ‘But, oh, I don’t know. Can he get African American support?'”

“I want to read you a quote from the Reverend Rodric Reid that the Indianapolis Star interviewed,” Todd continued. “He’s a pastor at the Uplift Church in Indianapolis. Here’s what he said. ‘I guarantee it’s going to be an obstacle.'”

“This is about the fact that you’re married to another man,” Todd interjected, then continued to quote Reid. “‘I guarantee it’s going to be an obstacle for the candidate from South Bend. That is really still a touchy subject, specifically and especially in the African American church. Now, I think it could be overcome, because we are gradually getting to a point of, and I don’t want to say ‘accept,’ but we are getting to a point of realizing this is the culture that we are going to have to begin to live with and adapt to it.'”

“I know you’re trying to have these conversations with a lot of African Americans,” Todd said, and asked “How are they going?”

“They’re going well, and we are working very hard to engage people across the party, but especially black voters, who expect you to demonstrate, especially when you’re new on the scene, what your values are and how you’re going to promote policies that lift them up,” Buttigieg said, adding that “I also think we have a moment on our hands when we can do the exact opposite of what the president has done.”

He's surely going to face more of this over time, and his answers were brilliant ways of defusing the situation.

In the 2004 presidential primaries, a columnist for the Boston Globe (Kevin ? McCarthy? really good local columnist) wrote, "Campaigns are long for a reason" and went on to offer a compelling case for the need and the duty for voters and journalists to basically "kick the tires" thoroughly. (If memory serves, he was also using this POV as a means of arguing the value of the early, more intimate primaries in smaller states such as Iowa and NH, where candidates meet voters one-on-one, both for the voters AND the candidates themselves). Our general nominee will need to be well-practiced, well-vetted, well-trained, and well-armed before dealing with MF45.

I do wish that the "first" primaries and caucuses would be held in a rotating order of states. It is bizarre that two small states always go first.

But, since the last election, I moved to SC, and will get a chance to see what living in an early primary state is all about.

African American voters are more conservative on the whole than other Democratic leaning groups, especially if they're church-going.

We get 75% of the LGBT vote on average (I think Clinton did slightly better in 2016 than we usually do but within the MOE). As a gay male I know full well that more than 25% of white LGBT people are racist to some degree. Even if all the racist LGBT voters don't vote for us, that leaves a non trivial number who do. I think the percentage of straight white racists who vote for us is miniscule. I would be amazed if the average white LGBT Democratic voter weren't more likely to be racist than the average white non LGBT Democratic voter. Racists and white anti LGBT voters have a place, it is called the GOP. While some of them may not go there, I don't think many of them vote for us. Europe provides us some insight. The far right parties in both France and the Netherlands did quite well among gay voters and had gays ranking high in their parties.

https://www.pinknews.co.uk/2017/05/04/a-third-of-french-gays-are-voting-for-marine-le-pen-who-will-abolish-same-sex-marriage/

The poll at that link was of gay men only (I think lesbians were likely less likely to vote for Le Pen)

People aren't monolithic on issues. When you get very high percentages of a group of voters then within that group there is going to be a pretty far range of position on issues. When you get a smaller percent of a group of voters then within that group there will be less range of position. Our percentage of the white vote has fallen below 40 and is likely to stay there barring a blow out win. Obama won a higher percentage of the total vote than Gore but Gore did better among whites. Clinton did worse among white than Obama did. The whites who do vote for us are going to have less variation in terms of ideology than either LGBT voters or blacks. So yes, I do think white LGBT Democratic voters are more likely to be racist than white straight Democratic voters.

If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for:
Joe Biden

Mon Jun 17, 2019, 07:44 AM

In 2000 the white vote went 42 Gore 55 Bush the black vote 90 Gore 9 Bush
In 2004 the white vote went 41 Kerry 58 Bush the black vote 88 Gore 11 Bush
In 2016 the white vote went 37 Clinton 57 Trump the black vote 89 Clinton 8 Trump

That averages to 40 percent of the white vote and 89 percent of the black vote.

https://www.pollingreport.com/lgbt.htm

The link above features links to many polls given on lgbt rights I am using numbers from the first and second poll listed (The Quinnipiack and the Public Religion).

Since neither are broken down by race I am going to make the assumption that blacks are 90% as likely to be homophoblic as the population as a whole while whites are equally likely to be. Thus when a poll says 23% of people aren't open to voting for a gay or lesbian presidential candidate that about 21% of blacks and 23% of white think that way. I honestly think they are equally likely but since I don't have data to back that up I am trying to be conservative in my assumption.

The first Q poll question is openness to voting for a gay or lesbian candidate it split 70% yes 23 % no 7 % unsure. Using my assumption above that means 21% of black voters and 23% of white ones aren't open to voting for a gay or lesbian candidate. Since 89% of blacks vote for Democrats that means 11% don't. Let's assume, likely correctly that all 11% of them answered no, that leaves 10% of those nos voting Democratic. 10/89 = 11%. Now 11% of 40% is 4.4% thus the 23% of whites who answered no would have to split 4.4 Democratic and 18.6 GOP for the likelihood to be equal. That would be us getting nearly 20% of the white voters who won't vote for a gay or lesbian presidential candidate. I just don't think that is remotely close to true since white homophobes have a party, it is called the GOP.

The Public religion poll features a question on laws protecting LGBT in housing, employment and public accommodations. 25% oppose or strongly oppose such a law. By above that would be 22.5% of blacks and 25% of whites. Using the same method as above, we get 11.5/89 or 13% of black Democratic voters answering oppose or strongly oppose. That would translate to a 5.2% 19.8% split among whites for the likelihood to be equal. That would mean we get 20.8% of the votes of whites who oppose or strongly oppose those laws. Again, I don't think that is remotely likely.

In a primary I think these numbers would be tough for Pete to overcome. Now on the good news side the percentage of black Democrats he has a shot at is pretty high 87 to 89. He has other issues to be fair. But I do think that at least 11% of blacks won't vote for him in a primary under pretty much any circumstances. In the general, who knows. Trump is pretty hated, for good reason, by black Democratic voters. Hillary did average among the 3 candidates and Trump did the worst among the 2 GOP candidates. I don't see black Democratic voters voting for Trump the question is would they stay home instead. I have no earthly idea how many would do that. I hope very few if any. But it merits discussion. We can't pretend that problems don't exist when they do.

Nice try though.

You seem to have a very low opinion for the intelligence of POC, assuming they vote on this one issue and would not vote for an otherwise qualified candidate simply based on sexual orientation.

My black friends and co-workers vote as my white friends and co-workers do - on a variety of issues that are important to them. I’m gay, but that’s not my number one issue in voting.

Really can’t believe you think this about POC; they are not a monolithic voting group.

Look, in terms of percentages it isn't alot but likely more than with white Democrats. But in a primary where every vote counts it could make a big difference. It is you who assume they are monolithic not I. You assume that 89% of blacks, all blacks, are non homophobic in a country where about 1/4 of the population is. You, not I, are assuming less variation in the view of blacks. That is the definition, by the way of monolithic. We get a much, much wider slice of black voters than we do of white voters (89% vs 40%). So there will be more variation in the 89% than the 40% unless there is significantly less variation in blacks than whites. I certainly don't think all or most or even a great deal of black Democrats are single issue voters. But when 23% of the general population says flat out I won't consider a lesbian or gay candidate for President, we can assume a non trivial number of all groups believe that. Now, to what extent would facing a choice of Buttigieg or Trump drive that number down, I don't know? Neither do you.

You live in the South now I don't know where you work but I work in a school. Teachers tend to be more likely to be Democrats than GOP even in the South where I live as well. Still in my building many white teachers vote GOP despite the fact they literally but their salaries. Why, due to abortion and guns. I doubt we do much better than a 50/50 split in terms of white teachers in my building which is good for white vote in NC but given that the GOP cut our salaries, took away our tenure, and denigrate us continually in the press we should be getting about 100% of that vote.

There are gay black people too, you know.

Throughout my life, working with, living with, and knowing black folks here in the south - I can say I got more crap from white people than I ever got from anyone who is black.

In fact, I can’t think of a single time I heard a derogatory remark from anybody black that I’ve known. Whites, on the other hand, freely expressed their disapproval on occasion.

It's a legitimate question. The Af. American community has a higher percentage of religious followers than other demographic groups in the Democratic Party, so it's a legit question to ask if that makes being gay a higher hurdle in that demographic than some others.

That doesn't mean Buttigieg can't overcome the disadvantage, or at least make the situation better. Still, it's a hurdle the others don't have. His youth is another obstacle.

This is the first time an openly gay person has run for President. His homosexuality is going to keep some voters from voting for him, like some voters won't vote for a woman to be Commander in Chief.

Kamala Harris has obstacles of her own. Not only is she of mixed race, but she's a woman, too.

Biden is older than anyone who's ever been elected. Warren, Klobuchar, & Gabbard have the woman issue. Cory Booker has the race issue, but I think Obama made that almost nonexistent for black males for most voters.

To say that another way. One party protects and advances LGBT+ rights and freedoms, and that party overwhelming gets the majority of African American voters. Another party receives the majority of white voters, and all that party does is attacks LGBT+ rights and freedoms.

So I can't speak for religious black people, but the reality is they don't vote on their homophobia.

52. "African Americans remain less likely than white Americans to support same-sex marriage"
Sun Jun 16, 2019, 11:10 PM
Jun 2019
African Americans remain less likely than white Americans to support same-sex marriage, as has been the case for several years. But at the same time, a new Pew Research Center survey finds that a majority of blacks – a significantly bigger share than among whites – say that wedding-related businesses, such as caterers or florists, should be required to provide wedding services to gay and lesbian couples.

Our aggregated 2014 polling has found that about four-in-ten black Americans (42 %) support same-sex marriage, 11 percentage points below the comparable figure among whites (53%). Meanwhile, seven-in-ten African Americans (70%) say that homosexual behavior is a sin, compared with 47% of whites who say this, according to our new survey.

54. 'He's white, male and gay': Buttigieg hits obstacles with black voters -- May 15, 2019
Sun Jun 16, 2019, 11:17 PM
Jun 2019
Joe Darby, a prominent pastor in Charleston, S.C., was discussing the Democratic presidential field with fellow clergymen when Pete Buttigieg’s name came up. A fellow pastor quickly interjected.

“Isn’t that the dude who kissed his husband on TV?” the person asked skeptically, according to Darby.

The exchange highlights a major obstacle for Buttigieg, who’s vaulted into the top tier of Democratic candidates without gaining traction among African Americans, according to recent surveys of national and South Carolina Democrats. But as the mayor of South Bend, Ind., devotes more effort to campaigning for black votes in the South and elsewhere, he will have to break down some resistance over his sexual orientation, particularly among older voters, according to interviews with more than a dozen African American activists, political strategists and clergy, as well as a review of public polling.

Buttigieg and his campaign are well aware of the issue. As he skips from sold-out fundraisers to overflowing rallies around the country, Buttigieg set aside time last week for a smaller gathering of black LGBTQ faith leaders and activists in Houston. Gathered around a glass coffee table, Buttigieg opened up to the group of a dozen about his record with African Americans as mayor in South Bend, Ind. — an area that has generated some criticism — as well as his agenda for black voters and his experience as an openly gay candidate for president, including the challenges he may face.

“He’s white, male and gay, all three of those things are going to create obstacles for various communities — specifically, I think, the white and the gay, for the black community, are definitely going to be obstacles for him,” said Harrison Guy, a Houston-based choreographer and LGBTQ activist who led the discussion with the mayor. “He’s very aware of that.”

Maybe the entire metro Atlanta area is an exception, but most people do not attend church. At least not the 55 and under crowd. Most identify as Christian, and there are a lot of churches, including mega churches, but I don't know anyone who attends more than once a year, if that. A lot of people aspire to find a church and attend regularly, but never get around to it, so polling on the topic might lead to misleading results. The exception would be Jehovah's witnesses. They attend fairly regularly. I don't know their views on gay people and gay marriage, but one of my cousins grew up in that religion and is openly gay.

There are so many openly gay black people living and working in Atlanta and the surrounding counties. I'm sure they run into homophobes here and there, black and white.

As others have repeatedly pointed out, the Democratic party supports gay rights and black voters overwhelmingly support the Democratic party.

I'm so sick of people (including black) always reflexively believing the worst about black people. This is why cops and others still get away with lynchings, etc--because as long as the cop or vigilante has an "excuse," regardless of how outlandish, people will believe it.

My sister lived in Buckhead, near Phipps Plaza for 4 years, whilst she was a dating one of her ex'bf's, and I visited her on multiple occasions. I would say that Atlanta (both white and non-white) is not nearly as conservative (with obvious and large exceptions) as the non-metro dwelling southern populace in general, with a fair amount of that due to a major influx of non-native southerners into the Metro Atlanta area.

I am half West Indian, and homophobia (often overt and quite widespread), is unfortunately endemic in many of the islands themselves and also our diaspora both in the US and also where I grew up, the UK (I am London-raised). Whilst maybe not as pervasive as it is within the West Indian (and Caribbean as a whole) community, my entire life experiences across a broad swathe of both geographical and socio-economic spectra show that our American communities of colour have far to go to help eradicate a deeply-set current of anti-LGBTQ bias. Having had two gay brothers in my own family has truly helped re-enforce this, unfortunately.

The myriad number of southern blacks (and people of colour in general) I know (both queer and straight, cis-gendered and not) have led me to have hope that this will be overcome, but also to be very aware that it is far from being a non-issue, especially amongst the older generations. The influence of the church within the A-A community, from my multiple perspectives (based upon my own observations, anecdotal experiences, and also empirical evidence) remains very strong, and unfortunately sometimes has a very regressive/reactionary streak contained within it at certain levels.
