It is not hyperbole to suggest that Senator Bernie Sanders's June 12, 2019 Democratic Socialism Speech was as profound as any delivered by either of the two men who Sanders frequently quoted: President Franklin D. Roosevelt and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. It was a speech in which the Vermont senator revealed that his campaign, and accompanying "political revolution", offer a unique vehicle for societal transformationfrom what President Jimmy Carter described as "an oligarchy with unlimited political bribery" to the realization of the promise offered by President Abraham Lincoln in his Gettysburg Address: "government of the people, by the people and for the people."
Sanders brilliantly coupled a condemnation of the tyranny of capitalist oligarchy with FDR's recognition that democracy and freedom are unattainable in the absence of economic security. That message was so powerful that all three major corporate-owned cable networksFox "News", CNN and MSNBCabruptly terminated their live coverage mid-speech. They did so before Sanders outlined what he described as a "21st Century Economic Bill of Rights".
Bernie noted that income and wealth inequality have soared to levels not seen since the onset of the Great Depression. "Three families," he said, control more wealth than the bottom half of our country, some 160 million people."
That was actually an understatement. As of 2017, America's three richest "individuals"Bill Gates, Jeff Bezos and Warren Buffetown as much wealth as the bottom 160 million, according to a report released by Institute for Policy Studies. "If left unchecked," Josh Hardy, the study's co-author observed, "wealth will continue to accumulate into fewer and fewer hands."

(83,655 posts)Second, we did not lose MLK. "Bernie Sanders Delivered the Most Profound Speech Since We Lost MLK" MLK is not a child on a the side of a milk carton, "Lost. Have you seen this child?" The man was executed on his balcony on On April 4, 1968, in Memphis.
I am horrified that MLK's death would be used in this way. The author of the article should be ashamed.

(694 posts)You're "horrified" that someone would say that a murdered person was "lost"?? It's a regular, common turn of phrase.
In fact, it's a term reflecting the great "loss" we as a people suffered.
But the perpetually outraged will never be happy.

(37,748 posts)The throw-John-Lewis-under-the-bus crowd is certainly milking this editorial, but for all its civil-rights self-righteousness, we saw what happened to John Lewis.
Words v. Actions. The latter is lacking both the alleged strength and convictions of the former.
(and I think you're confusing 'bemusement' and 'hate' again... and I certainly get it, mocking a sacred cow doesn't hold the weight of trendy, self-styled oppression that the "they hate us!" bumper stickers do. It's good marketing.)

I'm quite certain you maintained a most rational behavior when John Lewis was demonized for not bowing to the sacred cow.

(94,363 posts)(actually, at the present time I'm supporting Hickenlooper, Inslee, Klobuchar and Bennet).
As for "does it matter"? It does if the goal is to win nomination as President. When you're actually DROPPING in the polls, doing something that doesn't help is a wasted effort.

(44,984 posts)doesn't matter. Maybe since you've decided on a candidate you should be more concerned that he can't change my mind into supporting him seeing as how he was my governor and work on talking him up. I don't see any support for him in my local political group chats.
