Elizabeth Warren wrote AOC's entry in the Time 100

https://boingboing.net/2019/06/16/elizabeth-warren-wrote-aocs.html

Fast rising Democratic Presidential candidate and US Senator from the state of Massachusetts, Elizabeth Warren wrote Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez entry in Time Magazine's list of 2019's most influential leaders.

Time:

The year 2008 was a reckoning. While millions of Americans lost their livelihoods to Wall Street’s greed, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez lost her dad to lung cancer, and her family fell off a financial cliff. She watched as our government bailed out Wall Street while it ignored families like hers. She learned the hard way that in America today, Washington protects the powerful while leaving hardworking people behind.

Her commitment to putting power in the hands of the people is forged in fire. Coming from a family in crisis and graduating from school with a mountain of debt, she fought back against a rigged system and emerged as a fearless leader in a movement committed to demonstrating what an economy, a planet and a government that works for everyone should look like.

A year ago, she was taking orders across a bar. Today, millions are taking cues from her. She reminds all of us that even while greed and corruption slow our progress, even while armies of lobbyists swarm Washington, in our democracy, true power still rests with the people. And she’s just getting started.

I was leaning toward Warren. My first instinct about her was no. But then she caught my attention along the way. I found her impressive, as apparently some others have. But it seems as if my first instinct was correct. For me.

I'd go back to the drawing board, but I don't think any of the others can win the nomination, frankly. Except for Biden, of course. I'm not a fan of his, so was hoping for a real contender.

I absolutely do not think Biden is inevitable (not saying you in anyway implied that). I do not like his flip on his initial stance advocating for 4 year tuition free public uni to now only covering 2 year community college (and not even the first 2 years at a public uni), and also his public option (which is what I support, not a M4A scheme that does away with ALL private insurance) now being a Medicaid, not Medicare-style option. Medicaid pays so little to providers there will be massive resistance from doctors and nurses so it seems like a baked-into-the cake fail. I need to see more about this plan from him, as maybe he addresses this.

15. The 2020 election is not about plans and programs and ideology & purity.

You can decide on a candidate that way, of course. As long as you realize it has nothing to do with which candidate will be the nominee and who will win the GE.

I don't think Biden is inevitable, but close. There isn't anyone else, really, who appeals to a broad swatch of voters. Most of the rest are niche candidates.

As for me, I just require a strong liberal stance on a couple of issues. Biden is not strong on issues...Biden is about "unity" and working across the aisle and making excuses for Repubs who fail to protect America's democracy. Biden likes to be liked. Unfortunately for us, he's likely to be the nominee. But as long as he can beat Trump.... and he is fairly strong on protecting Social Security & Medicare (2 of my key issues).

16. I think this election is about ideas but not ideology.

The idea is that there is something fundamentally wrong with our politics and economy. For Warren the key is wealth inequality, an idea I think will resonate with more moderates than many people assume.

Biden seems to represent the idea that the fundamental problem is Trump himself, and that other problems will be solved by our current political institutions once he is gone. Some seem willing to go along with this, not because they believe it, but because they think other people believe it.

18. No. It's about normalcy and beating Trump.

The Democrats all support the Democratic Platform. People know the score. They all support SS & Medicare, want health care accessibility for all, fairness to the middle class and working class, more concerned about the environment and climate change than Repubs, support gay rights, support Af. American rights, supprt voting rights act, support female rights, etc. All the Democrats support these things.

People want to end the drama, the hate, the angst, and return to normal.

We don't have the luxury of trying to decide whether 2 vs 4 yrs of free college is the way to go. That's a detail that doesn't matter in a time when we get NO free college, and most people don't go to college.

But plans like Warren's appeal to a small segment that's into her specifically, or whatever. Most people are thinking more broadly.

As for me...campaign plans are meaningless. They're pipe dreams and are never passed. What matters is the politicians general belief and direction he wants to go. But 2020 is even broader than that. Normalcy...beat Trump.

19. Well, I respectfully disagree, and that is part of my point.

Biden and his supporters believe it is about beating Trump.

Sanders, Warren and Buttigieg believe it is about structural changes to our economy and political system.

Most of the candidate disagreements I've seen on DU seem to revolve around some version of change vs. normalcy. The changes they are talking about are not 2 year vs. 4 year college. Buttigieg is talking about changing the Supreme Court, which hasn't been done in 150 years. Warren is talking about an "ultra-wealth tax" designed to redistribute wealth. We've never had a tax like that. These are big controversial changes.

My contention is that people are ready for a major leftward shift as big or bigger than the rightward shift Reagan brought in. There was a time Reagan was thought too conservative to win a general election. Now he'd be too liberal to win a Republican primary.

The pendulum swings.

Different types of Democratic Congress members for different types of districts. It is the way it works, there is no one-size-fits-all template for a Blue Congress, regardless of how much the Bernie-style hard LW or the centrist and moderate Blue Dogs and New Democrat Coalition and finally the centre right Republican-lite (on multiple issues) Problem Solvers types want to think there is.

how she gained so much influence as a young newcomer to politics. The old rules were that you played the game, served the powerful, and eventually they invite you into the elite circle. The new rules are that you grab media attention to create your own power base. She's got it and her elders don't.

He has corrupted an entire political party by being public and loud.

AOC isn't loud, but she understand that in the era of news being a profit generator and social media, that if you wait for someone to recognize and reward your message, you're losing. I wish things weren't that way, but they ARE, and she has adapted to that reality.
