https://www.cnbc.com/2019/06/18/billionaire-trump-donor-says-he-rejected-joe-bidens-request-for-fundraising-help.html

Democratic front-runner Joe Biden on Monday appealed to a billionaire Republican donor for fundraising help in his presidential campaign. But the financier, Trump-supporting New York supermarket magnate John Catsimatidis, declined.

Biden spoke to Catsimatidis, who has an estimated net worth of $3.1 billion, for about 10 minutes at a fundraiser held at the New York home of short seller Jim Chanos, according to the businessman. When Biden asked for his help, “I just smiled,” Catsimatidis said.

Catsimatidis, who owns the New York supermarket chain Gristedes and ran for mayor in 2013, had praise for Biden, but he is sticking with President Donald Trump in 2020. Catsimatidis was an invited guest to the Monday fundraiser and did not contribute to Biden’s campaign to gain entrance.

“I think Joe Biden is the most common sense nominee of the 23 people running in the Democratic Party,” he said. “Monetarily, I did not commit to helping him but I will treat him fairly on my radio show.”

(He supports Democrats who are Greek-American). Sort of like Trump in miniature: garishly wealthy decor, on display, and lots of self-aggrandizing photos of himself.

who hosted the Biden fundraiser is 'The Catastrophe Capitalist'.

Chanos hosted it in his own flat (must be some flat, there were 180 plus people there).

Chanos' fund is not just any hedge fund, it is one of the world's biggest 'short' funds, ie. it wagers on the destruction and devaluation of assets/firms/etc. He has been trying to financially destroy Tesla (the electric car firm) and Elon Musk for years. He really makes a shit tonne of money in a down market, in a bad economy. The greater the misery index, the happier he is.

The Chanos fund's name is Kynikos Associates. Kynikos (in Greek ?????ό? ) literally means 'cynical' in Greek.

?????ό? also means dog, and one of the main ties between cynicism and dogs is Diogenes, the ancient Greek philosopher who lived in a giant wine pot in Athens surrounded by stray dogs. He carried a lit lamp all the time, even in the day, and said it was because he was 'looking for an honest man'. Alexander the Great sought him out, and when he found him, he asked him if Diogenes wished to tell him (Alexander) anything and Diogenes said "Yes, stand out of my sunlight." Alexander then declared, "If I were not Alexander, then I should wish to be Diogenes." "If I were not Diogenes, I would still wish to be Diogenes," Diogenes replied.

It gives a hedge to people from a total loss of their portfolios and allows them to make money even as the stock market is crashing. It is a part of every stock market everywhere and has existed way before Chanos.

The socialists need to learn basic tenets of capitalism and not confuse revenue with profits just for sloganeering.

never claimed it started with Chanos. Your 'socialist' snark is also ludicrous. I am a confirmed proponent of capitalism (I just want it highly regulated, as it is in the Nordic model) and was not engaging in anything remotely 'sloganeering.' That all said, there is NOTHING 'Middle Class' about going cup-in-hand to a bunch of billionaires, and here IS some pointed critique: Chanos is definitely NOT providing a socially beneficial service to the market and the populace in general. He is a financial parasite, existing to a huge extent not to run shorts as a hedge, but shorts for a purely aggressive, negative outcome-inducing profit scheme. He is yet another symptom of a diseased, rigged financial system, a casino-like system run amok with cronyism and regulatory capture.
