Democrats Blast Biden For Recalling 'Civil' Relationship With Segregationists

The day after former Vice President Joe Biden recalled his "civil" and productive working relationships decades ago with two longtime segregationist and racist fellow lawmakers, fellow Democrats are pouncing.

At a New York City fundraiser Tuesday night, Biden told donors he's reached across the aisle throughout his career. "I was in a caucus with James O. Eastland," Biden said, according to a pool report. "He never called me boy, he always called me son."

"Well guess what? At least there was some civility," Biden said, also pointing to a working relationship he forged with Georgia Sen. Herman Talmadge, another segregationist Democrat. "We got things done. We didn't agree on much of anything. We got things done. We got it finished. But today, you look at the other side and you're the enemy. Not the opposition, the enemy. We don't talk to each other anymore."

Eastland represented Mississippi in the Senate for decades. He decried integration in public schools, the military and elsewhere, and was a staunch opponent of Civil Rights legislation.

At the height of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s landmark Montgomery bus boycott, Eastland told a segregationist rally that, "In every stage of the bus boycott we have been oppressed and degraded because of black, slimy, juicy, unbearably stinking n*****s." According to Robert Caro's Master Of The Senate, Eastland went on to urge the crowd to "abolish the Negro race" with "guns, bows and arrows, slingshots, and knives."

"You don't joke about calling black men 'boys,'" New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker, one of three black Democratic candidates for president, said in a statement Wednesday. "Vice President Biden's relationships with proud segregationists are not the model for how we make America a safer and more inclusive place for black people, and for everyone. I have to tell Vice President Biden, as someone I respect, that he is wrong for using his relationships with Eastland and Talmadge as examples of how to bring our country together."

THANK YOU SENATOR BOOKER for Standing Up To This.....and as for Biden, he truly picked the WRONG WEEK --- Juneteenth Week and Juneteenth is TODAY -- to come out to say some crap like this. He will sink like a ROCK with African-American voters once this gets around. Joe Biden is NOT Barack Obama and We...Know...This!

As for the typical question. Our Response:

****We Are Not Past The Primary Yet or YET to Have One Democratic Debate. With That -- We Will Vote For The Democratic Nominee and Warren continues to move up in the polls --- and has a year to keep doing so.****

For me (I would never pretend to speak for others) this is relevant and troubling. Combine that with his extremely poor showing at the Poor People's Campaign (if THAT Biden shows up at primary debates and other major events, let alone a debate with Rump he is sunk). He was very bad, rambling, lost trains of thoughts, unable to put complete sentences together in a cogent, coherent manner, and had very problematic interactions physically with the moderators (2 of whom were African-American, and 2 of whom were female, including a female of colour).

We just lost the will to continue desegregation efforts as politicians like Biden gave in to political pressure.

While we were actively de-segregating public schools in the 70s and 80s, educational equity increased. When we stopped in the late 80s and early 90s it decreased. We gave up and gave in.

“I worked with Strom Thurmond all my life,” House Majority Whip James Clyburn (D-S.C.), the highest-ranking African American in Congress, said of the infamous segregationist senator. “You don’t have to agree with people to work with them.”

And I hope it continues. She inspires me each time I hear her speak.

I wish I felt the same way about Biden. He did a great introductory video where he waxed poetic about America. His video hooked me. But now I'm feeling ok-ish about him. That's me being honest and not an attempt to get people to support someone else.

When Harris spoke here in Atlanta I thought she would be unstoppable. I was excited about the possibilities of politics again. Her rise has stalled, though I still eagerly support her and think she could quickly get a lot of people behind her.

Warren may be the leader that emerges as the figure that will unite enough of us and inspire enough Americans to trounce Trump. It could be Biden. I wish he would stop it with the gaffes, though. It's hard to think before you speak. And, in the case of Biden, since he's not doing a lot of speeches, a single sentence can take on a life of its own.

Biden needs to keep filling the funnel with a steady drumbeat of communication as a way to counter the weight of gaffes. He's not doing that. It will take that kind of presence to win, though.

And Senator Byrd is dead, but before he passed, Senator Byrd said this about his past:

"Yes, Byrd was a member of the Klan. Even worse, as he wrote in his 2005 book, he formed a chapter of the domestic terrorist organization in the 1940s. Then, Byrd went into politics. Several times during his 57 years in Congress, Byrd’s Klan connection threatened to upend his career. But here is where Byrd is no Duke. He admitted his mistake and atoned for it in public and in policy.

In his memoir, Byrd wrote, “It has emerged throughout my life to haunt and embarrass me and has taught me in a very graphic way what one major mistake can do to one’s life, career, and reputation.”

to work myself up over that is simply not worth it. Instead of ASSuming the worst, I'm going to look at it logically based on what I've seen from Biden over the past 8 years.

ASS...what? You might want to watch your typing tone. FULL STOP.

Next, this is a Forum and we can comment on what we desire. Have an issue? There are 1000 other threads on the forum for you to comment upon as this IS an ISSUE. Period!

Obviously, not with you but no one can see Race behind a comment forum....so...and....uh huh. Yet, plenty can be told by what is written on issues directly relating to race.

Have a Lovely day and .

72. I love love President Obama and my ForeverFLOTUS but

the reality is most voters who don't post on message boards and tweet voted for the TICKET.

Let me add this. I have this background noise feeling that there's a reason we have 24 candidates (20 Democrats and 4 others). Speaker Pelosi is very positive we're going to gain the White House, keep the House and gain the Senate.

And I want to add this as an aside. Three months ago I posted a pic of my NUMBER 1 person to take on #TraitorTRump. It was Rep. Joe Kennedy. A week again #TraitorTrump said he was going to run his family as the new Kennedys.

I say no more.

that he would try to work across the aisle. We need to be careful not to beat up our general election candidate during the primaries, whoever that may be. We don't want another 4 years of this shitshow. I'm not locked in to anybody yet either. I will eventually support the candidate I think is best to deliver the swing states, and Biden could very well be that candidate.

90% of the Senate GOP caucus is racist, homophobic, and segregationist and we have to work with them anyway. I don't see what the difference is. Just cause they don't go out and scream it at the rooftops doesn't mean they're any less racist than Eastland.

Talking about civility with the GOP could help in the General.

It makes it a little easier for conservatives of all parties to stomach a Democrat.

Anyway, I am now 100% for Biden in the primary.

I'm done considering anyone else.
