Biden is top choice for climate-minded 2020 voters: Poll

<snip>

"Former Vice President Joe Biden is the top choice for president among likely Democratic voters who are focused on the climate, according to a new poll.

The online poll, released Monday as a collaboration between the Sierra Club and Morning Consult, limited its results to voters who said candidates' plans for the climate are an important factor in their vote.

While Biden would be the top choice for 37 percent of climate-minded voters, Sens. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) came in second and third with 19 percent and 15 percent, respectively.

The results echo other national polls of Democrats, which have largely found Biden far ahead of Sanders and Warren, with the senators in a tough fight for second place."

This isn't about 30 years ago. It is about now and whether his plan is genuine, workable and effective. That is in doubt because a few months ago he was still a all-of-the-above guy (i.e. fracking) and his new stance is not much better:

"This plan embraces dangerous nuclear power, environmentally-harmful biofuels, and foolish dreams of carbon capture and sequestration that will lock in our continued dependence on fossil fuels," said Pica. "Like most candidate climate plans, it barely addresses agriculture and the U.S.'s international obligations as the world's largest historic emitter."

<snip>
"Joe Biden's climate plan is a cobbled-together assortment of weak emissions targets and unproven technological schemes that fail to adequately address the depth and urgency of the climate crisis we face," said Hunter. "This plan cannot be considered a serious proposal to tackle climate change."

It's about temperature, not pollutants. Heavy droughts and famines and storms in unusual places and seasons is part of what we'll see more of, I agree, a lot of that is already baked in. We crossed that tipping point a few years ago, didn't we? Human beings are already living in a world climate that no other human has seen before. 400+ppmCO2. co2 isn't in the same class as other pollutants, no one is dying from breathing too much co2. A big storm here, a deadly heat wave there, and a crop killing freeze over there, and a forgotten disease outbreak over there. We could adapt to it if it would stabilize. But it won't. The rate of change is accelerating. I see predicted Worst Case Scenarios vanishing behind us every year.
We do have one tool, we can control our own CO2 output. So I don't think of it as a clean air and water issue, but as a heat issue. Heat and the greenhouse effect. We've been dealing pretty successfully with air and water pollution since the 60s and that is all well discussed and although it's a continuing issue it's a little bit old hat. It should not be confused with the scale of the climate problem. We only have that one tool a little while longer.
I think you and I are talking about the same thing. Sorry if I took the long way around to explain myself.

Tue Jun 25, 2019, 10:51 AM
Jun 2019

If one of my favorite candidates was as far out in front as Biden is this early on, I wouldn't be comfortable at all. In fact, I would be more nervous than comfortable because of so many instances where people starting out so high in the polls often drop like flies in the end. Past history is often a much better indicator of what happens than any polls are. Having said that, Biden's lead is so huge that it will be extra hard for the other candidates to surmount that much of a lead unless he makes some sort of disastrous mistake between now and next year.

Anyway, polls can be damaging in more ways than one. Since the polls highlight the 4 or 5 people in the lead, the uninformed poll watchers usually tend to pick one of the leaders just because the uninformed often tend to jump on the poll bandwagon without checking out everyone else in the poll. Polls with this many contenders can stifle the ones starting out at the bottom because all everyone is talking about are the leaders. Polls never educate.

Okay, I'll brace myself for another dreaded roly eye thing again.
