We might get our first major dropout of the 2020 Dem primary tomorrow. This comes after Swalwell cancelled a plan campaign swing through NH this past weekend>

(131,243 posts)He's been doing good work on the House Intelligence Committee, and he should get back to it. He's needed there more than he's needed as a presidential candidate.

(7,026 posts)Attacking age is disgusting. It's who the person is, not their age. There's no guarantee that young means knows more than old.

(6,321 posts)and when there is one, we need more diversity than that. The two senator seats in CA were held by women for the longest time and one now held by Harris. If Feinstein decides not to seek re-election in 2024 then I hope we can get someone excellent who can also best represent minorities: lgbt, hispanic, black, etc. We are way past electing white straight men in CA unless they are absolutely the most qualified (as was the case with Gavin). Representation matters, now more than ever.

(19,755 posts)That's really not good enough, or every recent nominee would have been born in IA.
FWIW, there is no recent precedent for a sitting House member winning a major party POTUS nom. A quick perusal of my memory, augmented by a not-as-quick trip to Wikipedia, and I'm fairly sure no sitting House member has gotten the GOP or Dem nomination in over a century, at minimum. POTUS, VP, Senator, Governor, random creepy pervert loser (*cough* Trump *cough*)... sure, all of those. And, it should be noted, people who had been in the House but later held other positions (including those who later became POTUS/VP/Senator/Governor/Ambassador/etc). But directly from the House to the POTUS general election? Not in any living person's memory...
